As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Lucas Torreira is unlikely to stay at Arsenal next season. This is a statement from the player’s father, who thinks that his son’s dream of playing for BOCA Juniors might not come true as the Argentine club might not be able to meet Arsenal‘s demands. He also believes Torreira’s future is not at Emirates, although it remains unclear whether a permanent move away from north London is on the cards this summer.
Lucas Torreira’s Poor Spell At Atletico Madrid
Lucas Torreira joined Atletico Madrid last summer, in a season-long loan deal from Arsenal. His departure had a lot to do with the arrival of Atleti’s own Thomas Partey in north London, as well as the fact that the midfielder was not considered as a part of Mikel Arteta’s long-term plans.
In Spain, however, Torreira has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular for Atletico Madrid. He has featured in just over 500 minutes of league football – mostly being considered as a bit-part player by coach Diego Simeone, who remains unconvinced of his quality.
As such, the Uruguayan international has fallen behind the likes of Saul Niguez, Koke, Hector Herrera and even Geoffrey Kondogbia in the pecking order. And although the player is happy with his life in Madrid, his loan contract is unlikely to be extended by Atletico.
Torreira, though, does have an alternative plan as the midfielder is keen on returning to his home continent and move closer to his family, especially after the death of his mother. BOCA Juniors are highly favoured by the player, but as mentioned earlier, the Argentine giants might struggle to meet Arsenal’s demands.
What Should Arsenal Do With Torreira This Summer?
Torreira will return to Emirates in the summer, following the end of his season-long loan spell at Atletico Madrid. His return should bolster Mikel Arteta’s midfield unit that has lacked depth.
However, the 25-year-old is not really favoured by Arteta and has had his fair share of problems in settling into English football. Arsenal, therefore, should definitely look to cash in on the midfielder in the summer, even for a cut-price, if they are to undergo a proper squad overhaul.
The potential departure of Torreira and another unwanted star in Matteo Guendouzi could serve as a major financial boost for Arsenal – potentially allowing them to fund a move for their main targets in the transfer market.
A permanent departure from Emirates should bode well for Torreira as well, as he looks to revive his career elsewhere. A potential return to Italy should be considered as an excellent option, as the midfielder had played for Sampdoria prior to his move to Arsenal in 2018 and shouldn’t find any difficulties settling into Italian football.
