According to Sport, Emerson Royal has emerged as a target for Arsenal. The Real Betis defender, jointly owned by FC Barcelona, is expected to return to Camp Nou in the summer and play for Blaugrana. However, the fullback does not want to remain as a backup for Sergino Dest, in which case, he fancies a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal emerging as the likeliest option.
Emerson Royal: Player Profile
A product of the Ponte Prata youth academy in his native Brazil, Emerson Royal moved to Europe in 2019, joining Barcelona for a fee of €12 million. He was immediately shipped out to Real Betis, who had jointly signed him, although it is Barca who own 50% of the player’s right.
Nevertheless, Emerson has become one of La Liga’s highly rated right-backs during his time at Real Betis. He has already notched up 78 competitive appearances for the club, notably being involved in nine goals last season.
The Brazilian has continued to perform at a high level this season, making 33 league appearances. He has impressed the onlookers with his defensive prowess and physicality that goes hand in hand with his willingness to get forward.
Emerson appeared more mature in regards to his positioning – making him one of the most solid fullbacks available in La Liga. He is also reportedly speeding up the process of naturalisation, in order to become a Spanish citizen.
Is Emerson A Good Option For Arsenal?
Arsenal will require defensive reinforcements in the upcoming summer transfer window, especially in the right-back department where Hector Bellerin simply hasn’t got going over the past few years.
The Spaniard’s fitness and pace have taken a massive dip, with the player not being as useful going forward. His main alternative in Cedric Soares also hasn’t done enough to establish himself as a first-team regular for Arsenal.
That is where someone like Emerson could be useful for Mikel Arteta, as the Brazilian offers solidity in transition. It is a vital element in his defense-oriented style of play that requires a lot of discipline in regards to positioning.
At the same time, the Real Betis fullback can move forward as well, influencing the attack with his crosses or forward passes. And at the age of just 22, Emerson Royal could indeed be an absolute bargain for Arsenal this summer.
