Tottenham Hotspur faced off against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park earlier today as they looked to pick up maximum points on the road. Spurs made a slow start to the game and conceding the opening goal in the 28th minute when Joelinton found the back of the net for the Magpies. However, Harry Kane scored a quick-fire brace soon after to complete the turnaround for the North London giants as they went into the half-time break 2-1 up on the scoreline.
Steve Bruce’s players kept themselves in the contest in the second half and finally managed to net the equalizer in the 85th minute when Joe Willock scored with a powerful finish. The match ended with Jose Mourinho’s men being held to a 2-2 draw away at Tyneside.
Let’s take a look at how each Tottenham player fared during the clash against the Magpies.
GK: Hugo Lloris – 7/10
The French keeper had to make some solid stops during the game but won’t be pleased after conceding a goal in each half.
RB: Japhet Tanganga – 6.5/10
Tanganga made a couple of important clearances and was also lively in the opposition half. He was unfortunate not to score with his header in the second half.
CB: Davinson Sanchez – 5/10
He was far from convincing on the defensive end of the field. Sanchez was responsible for giving away the ball which led to Joelinton’s goal in the first half.
CB: Joe Rodon – 8/10
Rodon was a rock at the back for Tottenham and made numerous clearances during the 90 minutes. He also won the ball back multiple times for his team but will be disappointed about the fact that his team still conceded two goals today.
LB: Reguilon – 7/10
The Spaniard defended well inside his half and engineered a couple of decent chances for his teammates in the final third.
RM: Giovani Lo Celso – 6/10
The Argentine tracked back to help his teammates out in defence when needed and made two encouraging runs in the Magpies half. Otherwise, he didn’t offer much in the attacking end of the pitch.
CM: Tanguy Ndombele – 7.5/10
He picked up an assist for setting up Kane’s second goal in the 34th minute. He also made multiple driving runs with the ball from midfield.
CM: Pierre-Emile Højbjerg – 7/10
Hojbjerg found a lot of joy in disrupting Newcastle’s flow in the game but his efforts weren’t enough for Spurs to claim all three points today.
LM: Lucas Moura – 6/10
The Brazilian had a couple of bright moments during his time on the field but was substituted after the hour mark.
ST: Harry Kane – 9/10
The English striker scored two great goals in the first half but should have added to his goal-tally with all the chances he got. He never gave the Magpies centre-halves a moment’s rest and caused all kinds of problems for them in the final third.
ST: Carlos Vinicius – 6/10
Vinicius never looked like he had a goal in him and got replaced at half-time.
Substitutes:
ST: Heung-min Son – 6/10
The South Korean sensation came off the bench for the second half but never got a sniff at goal.
CAM: Erik Lamela – 6/10
He created a good chance after coming on to the field but didn’t do enough to trouble the Newcastle goalie.
RM: Gareth Bale – N/A
Bale hardly had any time to make an impact.
