According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur are likely to part ways with Serge Aurier at the end of the season. The right-back doesn’t have a future at the club as Jose Mourinho looks to make noticeable changes to his defensive unit in the upcoming summer transfer window. It could involve the sale of Aurier, whose contract at north London expires in 2022.
How Has Aurier Fared This Season?
It was somewhat surprising to see Serge Aurier remain at Tottenham Hotspur following the arrival of Matt Doherty from Wolves. It appears Jose Mourinho had opted not to sell the right-back in light of the loan departures of both Juan Foyth and Ryan Sessegnon.
It turned out to be a useful gamble as well, as the Ivorian has offered some much-needed depth in the said position. In fact, he has performed significantly better than Doherty, who makes a strong case for being included in the list of Premier League’s worst signings of last summer.
Although Aurier himself has struggled with consistency and injuries, at times, he has often done well when given the opportunity. His impressive work ethic and ability to cover a lot of ground on the flanks have made him a tailor-made fit under Jose Mourinho’s tactical unit.
Yet, the former PSG star has featured in only 14 league matches and 21 in all competitions, with one-third of his appearances coming in the cup competitions.
Should Tottenham Cash In On Aurier?
Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to cash in on Serge Aurier in the summer, ahead of Doherty is not a reasonable move from a sporting perspective. However, it is one that must be done as the Lilywhites look to recoup some of the transfer fees this summer rather than seeing him depart the club for free next season.
Although there is no question over the Ivorian’s credibility at the highest level of football – Mourinho certainly deserves an upgrade – someone who can maintain his consistency and fitness throughout the course of the season.
Aurier’s departure from north London should pave the way for the Portuguese tactician to bring in a few fresh faces in the defensive unit. It is also fair to point out that Spurs also have Japhet Tanganga, who is more than capable of occupying the right-back role, although the youngster is a much more defence-oriented fullback when compared to Aurier and Doherty.
In addition to the experienced right-back, Tottenham also need to offload some of the other fringe players in the team, with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Juan Foyth and Eric Dier tagged as potential candidates.
