In a recent report, The Telegraph has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could rival Chelsea for Manchester City star Sergio Aguero when he becomes a free agent at the end of this campaign. It is believed that the Argentine marksman is willing to give up UEFA Champions League football to stay in England which could open the door for Spurs along with Chelsea to sign him in this offseason (via The Telegraph).
Aguero’s Growing Injury Frustrations This Season
Aguero is having a difficult season at the Etihad Stadium after missing a lot of games due to multiple injuries. The 32-year-old has registered three goals in 15 appearances for Man City this term across all fronts.
Most of his game time has come off the bench which explains why the Argentine veteran is only averaging 0.8 shots, 0.3 key passes and 0.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League this season. At least he has been tidy when distributing possession in the opposition half, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 78.6% in both those competitions (stats via whoscored).
Aguero’s glorious and highly decorated playing career with Man City is finally coming to an end this summer. If Jose Mourinho believes that he can get something out of the ageing Argentine, he should consider offering him a contract when the player becomes a free agent later this year.
What Will The Argentina International Bring To North London?
At 32, father time is catching up with Aguero’s game but he can still bang in some important goals for his team when he is playing well on the field. The 97-time Argentina international can be a lethal finisher in the final third and possesses the composure and ball-control to complete a few dangerous dribbles in the attacking third of the pitch.
The Quilmes-born sensation packs a lot of venom and precision with his shot attempts that make him a potent goal-threat from long range as well. Even though Aguero is slowing down and looks like a player on the decline, yet he can potentially add a lot of goals to any top-flight side in Europe.
Is Aguero A Decent Option For Spurs This Summer?
If Tottenham end up losing Harry Kane, then Aguero could be a good short-term option for them this summer. The Argentine striker will believe that he can once again be amongst the top scorers of Premier League football if he can remain fit in the upcoming campaign. Hence, Spurs can reap the benefits of having him on a short-term contract before relying on someone like Carlo Vinicius to step up and make a difference for Mourinho’s first team in the future.
