According to TuttoJuve, Tottenham are interested in Merih Demiral. The Juventus centre-back is facing an uncertain future at the club, putting numerous clubs across Europe, including Spurs, on alert as they look to take advantage of the Bianconeri‘s poor financial situation. However, Juve are yet to receive any official offers for Demiral, whose current contract expires in 2024.
What Does Demiral Bring To The Table?
Merih Demiral is highly regarded as one of Serie A’s most promising young centre-back, having enjoyed immense success at Sassuolo. A centre-back by trade, he is primarily known for his aggressive style of play, with the defender often looking to win back possession for his team.
Standing at 1.90m, Demiral’s imposing figure does not only make an intimidating figure in the press but also gives him a considerable advantage in the air – making him an indirect threat from set-pieces.
In addition to that, the Turkish international is a brilliant reader of the game and an excellent passer as well – making him a well-rounded centre-back. One of his weakest aspects, however, is the poor fitness record, as the defender has struggled with multiple injuries throughout his Juventus career.
During his first season at the Allianz Stadium, the 23-year-old could only muster six league appearances and it has been the same story in the ongoing campaign, with the player struggling with a muscle problem.
Is Demiral A Viable Option For Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur are currently going through a tough phase, in the aftermath of Jose Mourinho’s untimely sack as well as the criticism faced by the club over their decision to enrol themselves in the short-lived European Super League dream. They are also yet to find a new manager, and things are only going to get more difficult, especially with Erik ten Hag committing himself at Ajax.
Regardless of their manager, though, there are certain issues that need fixing at Tottenham next season, including the poor defensive unit that desperately needs reinforcement in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The club have struggled with Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld’s lack of consistency while Joe Rodon is not yet ready to take on the mantle of becoming a first-choice centre-back for the Lilywhites. That is where someone like Demiral could be useful.
The Turkish international’s robust style of play, coupled with his physicality, could be tailor-made for the Premier League, while his passing could make him a potential upgrade over Sanchez.
Demiral’s injury-prone nature, however, is a cause for concern for Daniel Levy’s franchise, especially if Juventus demand a fortune, especially considering the fact that the defender does have a four-year contract in Turin and offers a lot of prospect for the future. Hence, the 23-year-old might not be a viable option for the north London giants this summer.
