In a recent report, The Daily Mail has revealed that Sergio Romero is still hoping to join Everton this summer. It is understood that the Argentine keeper still has his heart set on a move to Goodison Park after Manchester United blocked his plans to do so last summer (via The Daily Mail).
Romero’s Fall From Grace At The Theatre Of Dreams
Romero has been frozen out at Old Trafford this season and has not played competitive football for a long time. However, there is finally some light at the end of the tunnel for the player as his current contract with Man United is set to expire at the end of this campaign.
Therefore, the highly experienced Argentine keeper will be free to join any club of his choosing on a free transfer this summer. Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti must be looking to strengthen his goalkeeping department as the form of Jordan Pickford and Robin Olsen has been quite inconsistent this season. Hence, Romero fits the bill perfectly as he is a low-risk option who won’t mind playing a sporadic role at Goodison Park in the coming years.
The 34-year-old has a brief yet sensational record in the Premier League where he has conceded just two goals and kept six clean sheets in seven league appearances for the Red Devils thus far. Therefore, he could serve as a reliable backup to Pickford or even replace him as Everton’s primary keeper if he can hit the ground running in the upcoming campaign.
Should The Toffees Bring Romero On Board This Summer?
Romero still has decent reflexes in his locker that help him pull off some solid saves at the back. He can distribute the ball well from inside his penalty box and is also a decent handler of the ball. The Argentine custodian can position himself ideally to make a clearance when his teammates need him to step up and clear the danger on the defensive end of the field.
However, there is no denying that father time is catching up with his game. As mentioned earlier, Romero has not experienced competitive football this season, so he would be a risk for any top-flight side in Europe.
Even then, the fact that he is available as a free agent makes him an attractive choice for the Toffees to consider this summer. All in all, Ancelotti should think about making a short-term offer to the Argentine veteran so that he can bring him on board as a backup to Pickford next season.
