Manchester City locked horns with Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium earlier today as they looked to secure a win in the League Cup final. Man City were dominant in the first half but Spurs managed to keep them at bay as both sides went into the half-time interval with nothing to split them.
The Mancunian giants pushed on in search of the winning goal in the second half and finally broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute courtesy of a well-directed header from Aymeric Laporte. The match ended with Pep Guardiola’s men securing a narrow 1-0 victory at the English capital as they lifted the League Cup for the fourth time in a row.
Let’s take a look at how each Man City player performed during the match against Spurs.
GK: Zack Steffen – 7/10
Steffen just had to make one save throughout the game and secured an easy clean sheet in the League Cup final.
RB: Kyle Walker – 7/10
He was strong in the air and did remarkably well to keep Heung-min Son quiet during the 90 minutes.
CB: Ruben Dias – 7/10
The Portuguese centre-back made some crucial clearances and did enough to keep the Spurs attackers at bay today.
CB: Aymeric Laporte – 7.5/10
The French defensive ace kept things solid at the back and was a dominant presence in the air. He was fortunate not to be shown two yellow cards in the first half and went on to determine the fate of this cup final by finding the back of the net with a good header in the 82nd minute.
LB: Joao Cancelo – 8/10
The Portuguese full-back won a lot of aerial duels and made a few encouraging runs with the ball down the left flank. He also created a couple of decent openings in the attacking third.
CM: Fernandinho – 7.5/10
The veteran midfielder won the ball back a couple of times and was quite lively in the Tottenham half.
CM: Ilkay Gundogan – 7/10
The German playmaker cut open the Tottenham defence quite a few times during the game but lacked the cutting edge in front of the opponent’s goal.
RM: Riyad Mahrez – 7.5/10
The Algeria international caused all kinds of problems for the North London outfit but probably should have gotten his name on the scoresheet.
CAM: Kevin De Bruyne – 7.5/10
De Bruyne showed his quality in patches during the game and picked up a good assist for setting up Laporte’s winning goal.
LM: Raheem Sterling – 6/10
Sterling made life difficult for the Spurs defenders but was not clinical with his shot attempts.
ST: Phil Foden – 7/10
The English attacker orchestrated a couple of promising chances in the final third but did not have his shooting boots on during the contest.
Substitutes:
CM: Rodri – N/A
He came on to see out the win.
CAM: Bernardo Silva – N/A
The Portuguese winger hardly had any time to influence the game.
