Tottenham Hotspur are desperately hoping to bounce back to winning ways as they take on Southampton on Wednesday. The Lilywhites are going through a difficult phase, having failed to win any of their last three matches. It has also put pressure on Jose Mourinho and a win could be imperative as the Portuguese tactician hopes to save his job.
Predicted Tottenham Hotspur Lineup Vs Southampton
Defence
Mourinho will have some decisions to make, as far as his defensive unit is concerned. Serge Aurier appears to be a favourite at right-back with Matt Doherty lacking match fitness while Japhet Tanganga is a bit too defensive.
Sergio Reguilon’s error led to Everton’s equaliser in the last game, but with no real alternatives available at left-back, Mourinho has to persist with the Spaniard. His attacking game could be useful, though, up against a Southampton side that do not have the best of defences.
Tottenham interestingly deployed a back three against Everton on the weekend, but that should be reverted to a casual back-four, with Toby Alderweireld and Joe Rodon forming the central defensive partnership, just ahead of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Midfield
In midfield, Mourinho made an important decision of integrating Moussa Sissoko back into the starting eleven. The Frenchman, however, may once again have to settle for a place on the bench, as his compatriot Tanguy Ndombele renews his partnership with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the double-pivot.
These two need to step up their game, having struggled with form and a lack of confidence in light of their poor run of performances. Ndombele, in particular, could be a useful asset for Spurs, as the Frenchman is gifted with the technical prowess that could take Southampton by storm.
Attack
Harry Kane was lethal in front of goal in the Everton game, capitalising on two scuffed clearances from Michael Keane. He will need to replicate that performance against a Southampton side who are likely to operate deep and prevent spaces in the final third.
It could make the job a bit more difficult for Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura on the wide attacking position, while Giovani Lo Celso should occupy the number ten role. The Argentine is due a big haul after struggling with form and injuries for the most part of the campaign. He is the one to watch out for in this crucial encounter.
