According to Corriere Granata, Leeds United are among clubs tracking Nicolas N’Koulou. The Torino centre-back is expected to leave the club in the summer, with his contract expiring at the end of the season. It has put Leeds on red alert, although the Whites could face stiff competition from AC Milan, Napoli and Bologna.
Nicolas N’Koulou: A Seasoned Veteran
A product of the Kadji Sports Academy in his native Cameroon, Nicolas N’Koulou has come a long way since his 2006 move to AS Monaco’s B squad. Thriving in stints with Monaco, Marseille and Olympique Lyon, the centre-back notched up over 250 appearances in Ligue 1 before switching to Torino in 2017.
N’Koulou has become an ever-present figure at the heart of the Torino backline as well, making 128 competitive appearances for the club so far. His leadership, coupled with his aggression and ability to read the game have made him an essential part of the club’s defensive unit.
Even at the age of 31, the Cameroonian international is considered a vital player for Torino, although he has not quite been a first-team regular this season. His experience is indeed valued by the Serie A outfit, though it seems the player’s association with the club could come to an end in the upcoming summer.
Is He A Good Option For Leeds?
Leeds United’s hunt for a new centre-back is not surprising as the club looks to prepare for the departure of Gaetano Berardi. In addition, it appears Marcelo Bielsa is keen on adding some competition for the likes of Liam Cooper, Robin Koch and Diego Llorente while the young Pascal Struijk is likely to be moulded into a holding midfielder.
In N’Koulou, the Whites could find themselves a calm and composed customer, who has a vast amount of experience at the highest level of football. It could be useful as Leeds United look to avoid the second season syndrome that was prevalent with Sheffield United this campaign.
In addition to his experience and leadership, the Torino defender will also be available for free as his contract in Turin expires at the end of the season. It bodes well for the Yorkshire outfit who will have limited funds to work with, in the upcoming summer transfer window.
