Borussia Dortmund are hoping to move on from their weekend debacle against Eintracht Frankfurt as they take on Manchester City on Tuesday. It is a vital game for the Black and Yellows, who have lost major ground in the race for UCL qualification in the Bundesliga and must perform well in the cup competitions during the remainder of the campaign.
Predicted Borussia Dortmund Lineup Vs Manchester City
Defence
It was surprising to see Edin Terzic opting for a three-man backline against Frankfurt on the weekend. Nevertheless, he is likely to shift to a back-four with Manuel Akanji likely to be sacrificed from the starting lineup.
It leaves Emre Can and Mats Hummels as favourites to start at the heart of the four-man backline, hoping to contain the mighty Man City attack this midweek. They might require assistance from fullbacks, though, and this is where things do get interesting.
Thomas Meunier remains an option at right-back, providing experience to the table. However, Mateu Morey is also fit and available and might be given the nod ahead of Meunier, due to his superior skills on the ball coupled with his positioning sense.
Terzic could face a similar dilemma on the opposite flank, where the pressure to relocate Raphael Guerreiro is set to spike after Nico Schulz’s awful display against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Marwin Hitz, on the other hand, remains a guaranteed starter for Borussia Dortmund, having become the number one goalkeeper during the halfway point of the campaign.
Midfield
Mahmoud Dahoud was rested in the form of a substitute appearance, in the recent game against Frankfurt. He is almost a guaranteed starter in the Dortmund midfield, alongside Thomas Delaney and Jude Bellingham as the relatively young unit look to restrict the Manchester City players from dominating the game in the middle of the park.
Alternatively, Terzic could opt for Can instead of Delaney, with Akanji starting alongside Hummels at centre-back. That remains unlikely, though.
Attack
Borussia Dortmund are dealing without one of their main man in Jadon Sancho at the moment, who will be disappointed to have missed out playing against his former club. The Black and Yellows do, however, have enough firepower without him as Marco Reus and Thorgan Hazard look to start just in behind the main striker Erling Haaland. It will be a special game for Haaland, whose father Alfie Haaland used to play for Manchester City during his playing days.
