In a recent interview with Football Insider, ex-Leeds United forward Noel Whelan has tipped Tottenham Hotspur superstar Harry Kane to leave this summer after a disappointing season at North London so far. Whelan said,
“He gave them an extra season on the back of wanting progression. Have they progressed, no?
“He stayed to give them a season of progression and a season where they want to be successful. Now, they’ve not been successful. A player like Harry Kane cannot linger around a club fifth or sixth in the Premier League.
“I’ll be really surprised if Harry Kane decides to stay at Tottenham. I don’t think they’ve lived up to the promises to Harry Kane. They probably did it with the fact that Gareth Bale was coming in.
“These players are coming in, we’re buying this player, that player. Harry Kane hasn’t got enough years in his football lifespan to waste any more time if he wants to wins trophies.
“You’ve got to move, you’ve got to move now. You’ve got to do it yourself as a player to get every little bit of chance of winning silverware.
“He’s been their ever-present and come through the ranks. However, as much as he loves Tottenham, that is not the club where he’s going to win trophies.”
Kane’s Excellent Form Despite Tottenham’s Recent Struggles This Season
Even though Spurs have struggled to find consistency in terms of results this season, Kane has managed to live up to his high standards by producing several match-winning displays under Jose Mourinho’s tutelage so far. The 27-year-old has banged in 26 goals and grabbed 16 assists in 39 matches for the London giants this term across all fronts.
Kane has continued to operate at his best in the attacking third as he is averaging 3.8 shots, 1.5 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game in this Premier League campaign. However, the London-born sensation has been guilty of losing the ball cheaply when linking up play with others around him, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 69.6% in league football (stats via whoscored).
What Are The England International’s Best Attributes?
Kane has established himself as one of the best centre-forwards in world football because of his ability to find the back of the net consistently at the highest level. He is a lethal finisher in the final third and can also set up some promising goal-scoring opportunities for others around him.
The English striker has struck up an almost telepathic understanding with Heung-Min Son this season, which makes him such a valuable member of Jose Mourinho’s first-team. However, Spurs’ poor display versus Dinamo Zagreb in midweek when they lost the second leg by a 3-0 scoreline and got knocked out of the UEFA Europa League will only add to Kane’s frustrations. Hence, Mourinho will find it difficult to convince him to stay for another season with so many top clubs eager to boost their frontline with a striker of his quality during the summer transfer period.
Why Mourinho Cannot Afford To Lose Kane This Summer
Kane is by far the best player in Tottenham’s squad at the moment, so losing him could be a hammer blow for them this summer. Hence, Mourinho cannot afford to lose his most potent offensive weapon if he is planning to build a squad capable of challenging for some silverware in the coming seasons.
