The Daily Telegraph has recently reported that West Ham United are among several clubs hoping to land Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, who is yet to begin negotiations over a new contract. It is believed that the Hammers could face competition in the form of Leicester City, Brighton and Hove Albion and other top English and European clubs in pursuit of the Blues centre-forward at the end of this campaign (via The Daily Telegraph).
Abraham’s Inconsistent Season At The English Capital
Abraham was not included in Chelsea’s match-day squad during their scoreless draw against Manchester United last weekend, which has raised some concerns over his long-term future under Thomas Tuchel’s stewardship. The English marksman has participated in 30 matches for the West London outfit this season, netting 12 goals and grabbing six assists in various competitions.
The 23-year-old has been far from productive with his offensive contributions as he is averaging 1.6 shots, 0.5 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per game in this Premier League campaign. He has also been guilty of being sloppy with his ball-distribution, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 72.8% in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Abraham has shown glimpses of his potential but needs to be more clinical in the final third if he wants to become a top goal-getter in European football someday. At 23, he still has a lot of room to improve, so a summer switch away from Stamford Bridge could help him earn regular first-team football in the coming seasons.
What Will The English Centre-Forward Add To David Moyes’ Side?
Standing at 1.90m, Abraham is a towering presence in the opposition half and can often use his strength to get the better of his marker in the attacking third. He scores his fair share of goals with his head because of his ability to outjump the opposition and dominate them in the air.
However, Abraham needs to take care of the ball a bit better when linking up play deep inside the opponent’s half. Even though the six-time England international has banged in some important goals for Chelsea this season, he is still far from prolific, so he needs to work on improving his finishing in the final third.
A striker of Abraham’s quality and potential will be a welcome addition to the Hammers squad as he will be a perfect alternative to Michail Antonio and could also form a lethal partnership with his fellow countryman at the London Stadium. More importantly, Abraham will add more goals to the West Ham frontline and could give them a physical edge on the field that might propel them to break into the Premier League’s “Top Four” in the years to come.
