In a recent print edition, Fichajes has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for Lazio striker Ciro Immobile at the end of this campaign. It is believed that Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has set his sights on the Italian striker after identifying him as a potential option to replace Harry Kane if the English forward leaves in the summer (translated by Sport Witness).
Immobile’s Excellent Form In The Serie A This Season
Immobile is having another impressive season at the Stadio Olimpico after producing several match-winning displays as the focal point of Simone Inzaghi’s attack. He has been involved in 28 matches for the Italian outfit this term, banging in 19 goals and providing four assists in multiple competitions.
The Italian marksman has been consistent with his attacking contributions in the final third as he is averaging 3.1 shots, 1.3 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in Serie A. However, the 31-year-old needs to be more accurate when distributing possession deep inside the opponent’s half. He has completed just 75.8% of his attempted passes in the Italian top tier (stats via whoscored).
Immobile’s current contract with Lazio is set to run out in the summer of 2025, so Tottenham will have to pay a significant fee to have a chance of landing the veteran forward during the summer transfer window.
What Does The Italian Frontman Bring To The Table?
Immobile is a quick and agile forward who can time his runs well in behind the opposition backline. He has a high football IQ and can get himself into some dangerous areas in the offensive end of the field. The 42-time Italy international can also use his strong 1.85m frame to hold the ball up and get others involved in and around the opponent’s penalty box. What makes Immobile such a great forward is his knack for finding the back of the net consistently at the top level.
Is Immobile The Right Choice For Spurs?
An experienced and proven goal-getter like Immobile could prove to be a shrewd acquisition for Mourinho if he can get a deal over the line for him. The Italian sensation will be a quick fix to Tottenham’s goal-scoring concerns if Harry Kane does end up sealing a move away from North London at the end of this campaign.
Immobile has all the skillset required to be a prolific goal-scorer in the Premier League, but at 31, he has only got a handful of years left in him to play at his best. Hence, Spurs would be better of retaining Kane’s services beyond this summer as he is an irreplaceable member of their first-team. Having said that, it is always good to have a back plan, and in Immobile, Tottenham could have a good short-term solution if they are willing to pay a big fee to acquire his services.
If Kane leaves, it seems like Immobile will be a decent choice for the London giants as he will be an upgrade over Carlos Vinicius, who has only been a sporadic feature in the Premier League thus far.
