On Sunday’s print edition, The Daily Star (28/02, page 45) has stated that Tottenham Hotspur are back in the race to sign Real Madrid winger Lucas Vazquez when he becomes a free agent at the end of this campaign. The Sunday Mirror (28/06, page 68) has also backed that claim as they reveal that Spurs are looking to get a deal done for the Spanish wide player, who is considering his options with his current contract with Los Blancos set to run out next summer (transcripted by HITC).
Vazquez’s Season Of Mixed Emotions At The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium
Vazquez is having an up and down campaign at the Spanish capital so far. He has mostly been used as a right-back this season but has done well to produce some impressive performances for the Madrid giants down the right flank.
The 29-year-old has been involved in 26 matches for Los Blancos this term, netting two goals and securing five assists in multiple competitions. The Spanish sensation deserves credit for influencing the game at both ends of the field as he is averaging 2.2 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, 1.0 shots, 1.9 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League this season. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from the right-wing after making 88% of his attempted passes in both those competitions (stats via whoscored).
What Will The Spanish Wide Player Add To Jose Mourinho’s Team?
Vazquez is quick and agile enough to make some dangerous sprints out on the wide areas. He has converted himself into a decent defender in recent times and deserves a pat on the back for orchestrating some meaningful chances for his teammates in the final third.
The Spaniard is also not shy of having a shot at goal but needs to be more decisive in and around the opponent’s penalty box. At 29, he still has a few good years left in his locker, so Spurs would be wise to bring him to North London when he becomes a free agent later this year.
Vazquez will be an upgrade over Serge Aurier, who has flattered to deceive with his performances this season. The Ivorian right-back is prone to making errors at the back, so the Real Madrid star could be an ideal replacement for him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Jose Mourinho might also fancy playing him as a right wing-back or as a right-winger when he is opting to play with three defenders at the back. Vazquez’s availability on a free transfer coupled with his experience and versatility makes him an attractive option for Spurs to consider at the end of this campaign.
