Newcastle United have confirmed on their official website that they have captured Matthew Bondswell, who was released by Red Bull Leipzig last month. The Magpies have received international clearance for the promising youngster, who expressed his delight and said (via nufc.co.uk),
“It’s an amazing feeling to be at such a big club.
“I’m really looking forward to getting started with the boys and hopefully doing some successful things in the future.”
Bondswell’s Recent Emergence In European Football
The Nottingham-born prospect began his playing career at his boyhood club, Nottingham Forest, before going on to make a switch to the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig back in the summer of 2018. Bondswell came through the German club’s youth ranks but failed to break into their first-team set-up in recent seasons.
Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann had no choice but to send the English left-back out on loan to play for FC Dordrecht before the start of this campaign. However, Bondswell’s season has been plagued with injuries this term which has hampered his progress in European football.
The English whizkid will now have the opportunity to make a fresh start at St. James’ Park and could be in line to taste some Premier League football after the international break if Bruce decides to promote him to his first-team. Otherwise, Bondswell will have to work hard to catch his new manager’s eyes on the training field so that he can gain some valuable minutes with the senior team soon.
What Are The English Starlet’s Best Attributes?
Bondswell is quite an adventurous full-back as he loves to make a few pacey runs down the left-wing. He excels at getting to the byline as he has got the quickness and agility to get the better of his marker out on the wide areas. The English prospect can create a lot of headaches for the opposition defenders but can sometimes leave himself too open at the back. Bondswell needs to work on improving his defensive skillset if he intends to become a world-class player in his position someday.
Is Bondswell A Good Signing For Newcastle In The Long-Run?
A left-back of Bondswell’s potential could turn out to be a shrewd signing for Newcastle in the long-run. Despite his inexperience in playing football at the highest level, the English sensation could still offer some healthy competition for Jamal Lewis and Paul Dummett at St. James Park in the coming seasons.
All in all, Bondwell will be a decent option for the Magpies for the long-term as he has all the right attributes to become a top player under the guidance of Steve Bruce if the Newcastle boss remains in his position beyond this summer.
