Manchester City played hosts to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium earlier tonight, hoping to extend their incredible winning run across all competitions. Pep Guardiola’s men made a quick start to the game and got themselves ahead in the 15th minute when Leander Dendoncker scored an unfortunate own goal. Man City failed to bury the contest in the first half and went into the half-time break, only one goal up on the scoreline.
Wolves kept themselves in the match and found the leveller in the 61st minute when Conor Coady found the back of the net. However, the Mancunian giants scored three quick-fire goals in the final quarter of the match, thanks to a brace from Gabriel Jesus and a goal from Riyad Mahrez. The contest ended with Man City earning an impressive 4-1 victory to consolidate their position at the top of the Premier League table.
Let’s take a look at how each Man City player performed during the match against Wolves.
GK: Ederson – 6.5/10
The Brazilian keeper couldn’t do much about Coady’s diving header in the 61st minute, which ruined his hopes of a clean sheet. He was hardly tested otherwise.
RB: Kyle Walker – 7/10
Walker kept the ball moving with ease but struggled to create any meaningful chances in the opposition half. However, he never gave up and delivered the decisive cross for Jesus’ goal.
CB: Ruben Dias – 7/10
The Portuguese defensive ace was strong in the air and kept possession ticking quite well inside his half. He did enough to neutralise the threat of Wolves’ Adama Traore.
CB: Aymeric Laporte – 6/10
The French defender was mostly untroubled during the game on the defensive end of the pitch and was tidy when distributing the ball.
LB: Joao Cancelo – 7/10
Cancelo didn’t put a foot wrong in the game defensively and made a couple of promising runs out on the wide areas. He also engineered some inviting chances for his teammates in the attacking third.
CM: Bernardo Silva – 7/10
He showed great desire to get up and down the field and worked hard to press the opposition relentlessly off the ball.
CM: Rodri – 6.5/10
Rodri played an influential role in the lead-up to Man City’s opening goal. However, he was also the one responsible for giving a cheap foul that led to Wolves’ equaliser in the second half.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne – 6.5/10
The Belgian international had a couple of shots but never looked like he had a goal in him. He also got stuck in with some tackles in what was an under-par display from him tonight.
RW: Riyad Mahrez – 8/10
Mahrez orchestrated his team’s first goal and was a constant menace for the Wolves defenders. He got his deserved goal late in the game.
ST: Gabriel Jesus – 8/10
The Brazilian striker began the match slowly but scored two quick-fire goals in the latter stages to kill the game off.
LW: Raheem Sterling – 6.5/10
He was guilty of squandering some decent chances to find the back of the net.
Substitutes:
CM: Ilkay Gundogan – N/A
The German midfield ace hardly had any time to influence the game.
