If the report from Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan) is believed to be true, Liverpool are set to rival AC Milan this summer for the signing of Torino defender Wilfried Singo. According to Sempre Milan, the club directors Ricky Massara and Paolo Maldini are keen on roping in the 20-year-old who is enjoying a breakthrough season in Turin. Yet the interest from the Reds might now lead to a transfer battle in the upcoming months.
Liverpool And Their Crisis At The Back
Liverpool have lost the mojo this season mostly due to their persistent injury woes. They have lost all three first-team centre-backs (Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip) for the entire campaign, whereas skipper Jordan Henderson is sidelined as well weeks after settling in a makeshift central defensive role. Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies were roped in on the winter deadline day to restore some stability in the heart of the backline, however, the latter has not been involved at all having failed to convince Jurgen Klopp enough in team training.
Nat Phillips was supposed to leave last summer but is now showing some resilience with his strong physical as well as the aerial presence in deep defence. Kabak, too, is settling down gradually after a torrid start, but the crisis would continue until Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip return.
A Gamble Worth Taking
Singo, meanwhile, has been one of the brightest sparks in a gloomy Torino side who are fighting a relegation battle. The youngster has not only impressed as a right fullback but also in a right wingback role while attuning to Davide Nicola’s unconventional formation. The Granata, therefore, won’t lose their prized asset for cheap in the upcoming window and the Merseysiders have already seen a bid of around €20m rejected for him according to the latest report from PianetaMilan. A fee of around €30m might be enough to strike a deal, however, neither of them are willing to fork out the demanded figure for the emerging Ivory Coast youth international.
Liverpool are heavily relying on Trent Alexander-Arnold down the right-hand side of a ‘back four’ and Neco Williams, the young Welshman, is yet to flourish as his understudy with limited opportunities over the past couple of years. He needs regular first-team football to stake a claim in Klopp’s plan and Sanogo, with his versatility, pace and power, would fit in to meet the demands of Premier League football. Now it is to be seen how things shape up in the forthcoming future.
