In a recent print edition, Bologna news outlet Il Resto del Carlino revealed that Everton have entered the race to recruit Bologna midfielder Mattias Svanberg. However, it is believed that the Toffees could face competition in the form of Southampton, Burnley and Brighton and Hove Albion in pursuit of the Swedish midfield ace (transcripted and translated by Sport Witness).
Svanberg’s Impressive Season In Italian Football
The Malmo-born talent has put in some eye-catching displays at the heart of Siniša Mihajlović’s midfield, so it is no surprise that so many top English clubs are keeping tabs on his progress in Italian football. The 22-year-old has registered three goals, two assists, five yellow cards and one red card in 25 matches for the Italian outfit this term in multiple competitions.
Svanberg has influenced the game at both ends of the field after averaging 1.1 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 0.6 clearances, 1.8 shots, 0.5 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A this season. He has even distributed the ball relatively well as he has made 80.5% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
The four-time Sweden international has shown plenty of promising signs with his performances this season. However, he will have to find a way to make a smooth transition to English football if the Toffees can win the race for his services in the summer.
What Will The Sweden International Bring To Goodison Park?
Standing at 1.85m, Svanberg is a strong presence in midfield and can read the danger quickly that allows him to win possession back for his team. He is a decent passer of the ball and can shoot the ball with power and accuracy from long range.
The Swedish sensation has a good work-rate and can also create some meaningful openings for his teammates in the opposition half. However, he can be a bit reckless at times with his decision-making which he needs to address if he intends to become a top player in his position someday.
At 22, Svanberg is only going to get better with each season and could add some healthy competition for the likes of Andre Gomes, Allan, Tom Davies and Abdoulaye Doucoure for a regular spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting XI.
The Bologna midfield ace will undeniably enhance the overall depth of the Toffees squad that could help them challenge for some silverware over the next few years. With all things considered, the Everton head coach should think about orchestrating a move to acquire the services of Svanberg when the transfer window reopens later this summer.
