In a recent report, The Sun has mentioned that Newcastle United are monitoring the progress of Brentford forward Ivan Toney. It is believed that the Magpies could face competition in the form of Leicester City and West Ham United in pursuit of the Bees striker (via The Sun).
Toney’s Impressive Numbers At The Brentford Community Stadium
Since arriving from Peterborough last summer, Toney has been a breath of fresh air in the EFL Championship because he has produced several match-winning performances as the focal point of the Bees attack. The Northampton-born sensation has scored 24 goals and grabbed nine assists in 34 matches for Thomas Frank’s side this term across all competitions.
The 24-year-old has performed well to average 2.9 shots, 1.2 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in the English second division. However, he has been guilty of giving away the ball cheaply after completing 67% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Toney could be tempted with an offer to join the Magpies if he is guaranteed regular first-team opportunities in the Premier League by Steve Bruce. He is good enough to strike up a lethal attacking partnership with Callum Wilson at St. James’ Park in the coming seasons.
What Will The Bees Striker Bring To Tyneside?
Toney is a moderately paced forward who can make a few promising runs with the ball in the attacking third. He is proficient at finding space for himself to get some shots in at goal and has proven himself to be an excellent finisher in front of the opponent’s goal.
The English sensation has even got a great leap in him that helps win some important aerial duels in and around the opposition penalty box. He is a good header of the ball and possesses the eye to play a killer pass up top. However, Toney is yet to justify his worth at the top level, so there are some question marks over whether he can maintain his prolific goal-scoring record in the Premier League if Newcastle can find a way to get him on board in the summer.
Is Toney The Right Fit For The Magpies?
Toney is a consistent forward who would add more quality and depth to Steve Bruce’s attacking department. He will serve as a suitable back-up to Callum Wilson or can even play with him when the Magpies manager decides to play with two strikers up top. With all things considered, Toney will be a decent fit for the Tyneside giants ahead of the new season as he will significantly bolster their squad for the coming seasons.
