Following a 3-2 win over Sevilla in the Champions League, Borussia Dortmund resume their Bundesliga campaign on Saturday when they take on FC Schalke in the iconic Revierderby. It is a vital game for the Black and Yellows, who are in desperate need of a win as they look to make a swift recovery during the second half of the campaign.
Predicted Borussia Dortmund Lineup Vs Schalke
Defence
Thomas Meunier made his return during the Champions League fixture against Sevilla and one could expect him to get back into the starting lineup, at the expense of Mateu Morey.
There shouldn’t be many changes elsewhere as Edin Terzic looks to continue with the central defensive combination of Mats Hummels and Manuel Akanji that fared reasonably well in the last match. Marwin Hitz may also continue in between the sticks, as Roman Burki is unlikely to get back to full fitness.
Raphael Guerreiro is another guaranteed starter in the left-back slot, after being subbed late in the game. The Portuguese international should play a key role in offering creative support on the far side.
Midfield
Mahmoud Dahoud was the biggest revelation during Dortmund’s win over Sevilla. The German international might be an option on Saturday as well, though Terzic is likely to settle for Thomas Delaney.
The Dane should be available after missing the midweek contest due to the birth of his first child. He is likely to renew his central midfield partnership with Jude Bellingham as Dortmund continue to cope with the absence of Axel Witsel.
Attack
Things could get much interesting in the attacking department. Julian Brandt and Giovanni Reyna were notable names to be dropped out of the starting eleven against Sevilla, but only Reyna could hope to return to the side.
The American youngster should replace Dahoud in the teamsheet and operate in the wide attacking roles alongside Jadon Sancho. Marco Reus should complete Dortmund’s creative trifecta as they look to provide the service for Erling Haaland upfront.
The Norwegian superstar is fresh from a Champions League brace against Sevilla and his confidence should be high as he looks to tear apart the Schalke backline this weekend.
