In a recent report, SportBILD has mentioned that Manchester City are locked in a three-way battle for Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, who will decide on his future on Tuesday. It is understood that the Premier League leaders are keen on recruiting the Austria international but will face competition in the form of Chelsea and Liverpool in pursuit of him (via SportBILD).
Alaba’s Good Form At Munich This Season
Alaba is enjoying another successful season at the Allianz Arena and has been responsible for putting in several dominant displays at the centre of the Bayern Munich backline. The 28-year-old has made 29 appearances for the German outfit this term, netting two goals and securing two assists in multiple competitions.
The Wien-born sensation has caught the eye with his performances in Europe where he is averaging 1.4 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 2.6 clearances and 0.6 key passes per game in the UEFA Champions League group stages. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball out from the back as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 87.4% in European football (stats via whoscored).
Alaba’s recent form suggests that he has still got plenty of football left in his locker to perform at a high level. Hence, it is no surprise that some of the top clubs in England, including Man City are showing interest in moving in for him when he becomes a free agent at the end of this campaign.
What Does The Austria International Bring To The Table?
Alaba has transformed himself into a class act in central defence for Bayern over the past couple of seasons. He is a decent tackler of the ball and can secure the ball back for his team quickly without losing possession.
The 76-time Austria international is a moderately-paced centre-back who can make some important recovering runs at the back. He is also a decent dribbler with the ball and can spray some accurate long balls to the front players, which makes him such a valuable member of Hans-Dieter Flick’s starting XI.
Will Alaba Be The Right Fit For Man City?
At 28, Alaba is currently playing at his prime and has won every major trophy with his current employers. Hence, a player of his winning mindset and defensive prowess could help Man City challenge for the UEFA Champions League trophy in the coming seasons.
Alaba could potentially form a dominant defensive partnership with Ruben Dias and could be an upgrade over John Stones and Nathan Ake because of his experience of playing at the highest level week in week out. All in all, the Bayern Munich star will be a great fit for Man City as he will significantly improve the quality of Pep Guardiola’s first-team in the short-term.
