Rangers remain the only shining light of Scotland’s European pride as they set to resume their Europa League campaign on Thursday night against Belgian outfit Antwerp. The fixture at Bosuilstadion would be the first-ever meeting of these two outfits and the hosts would attempt to beat a Scottish side for the first time since clinching a win against Dundee United in 1989/90 UEFA Cup.
The Gers, meanwhile, have been struggling of late but are grinding out results to maintain their supremacy at the top of Premiership standings. They punched above the weight last season but are favourites this time to make it to the Round of 16 of this prestigious European competition. A few disciplinary issues have led to controversies of late, however, Steven Gerrard’s men are determined to put the dispute to bed by securing a result on the road even though Antwerp stunned Spurs at home in a group stage encounter.
Predicted 4-3-3 Rangers Lineup To Face Antwerp
Defence
Jon McLaughlin must be waiting for his chances after a promising start, but the mastery of Allan McGregor can’t be compromised. The Scotsman would turn 40 next year, but his excellence between the sticks is still saving Rangers in close contests week in week out.
The Bears have a pretty stable backline with James Tavernier and Borna Barisic featuring as attacking fullbacks. Skipper Tavernier remains the Gers’ top scorer in the Premiership whereas Barisic has assisted thrice in this season’s Europa League, the joint-most of any defender along with Lech Poznan’s Tymoteusz Puchacz. The gaffer brought Leon Balogun back in action replacing Filip Helander against Kilmarnock and the same should be retained to maintain the composure alongside headstrong Connor Goldson.
Midfield
Both Steven Davis and Ryan jack are key to Rangers’ dominance in the middle of the park and the duo must feature to orchestrate the show with their pressing, passing and vision. Glen Kamara was rested against Killie but is expected to reclaim a starting status to operate as their chief ball carrier. His ability to hold possession and break down opponents’ moves would help the Glasgow giants in this tricky away tie.
Attack
Ianis Hagi was far from impressive last weekend and therefore, should be dropped despite having a brief experience in Belgium (with Genk). The versatility of Joe Aribo must be explored and the young Nigerian should occupy the right flank having impressed previously. His presence would help Gerrard to tweak the set-up to a ‘midfield four’ depending upon the momentum of the match. Alfredo Morelos is expected to spearhead the Rangers attack with Ryan Kent operating from the left-hand flank.
