Manchester United faced off against West Brom at the Hawthorns earlier this evening hoping to pick up a win and return to their winning ways in the Premier League. The hosts took the early lead as Diagne rose high to head the ball past David de Gea in the 2nd minute of the game. Bruno Fernandes equalised for the visitors around the 44-minute-mark as he converted from Luke Shaw’s cross. The contest ended 1-1 as the Baggies remained stubborn and compact at the back in the entirety of the second half.
Let’s take a look at how each Manchester United player fared during the match against the Baggies.
David De Gea – 8/10
Despite conceding an early goal, the Spanish-stopper put up an impressive performance between the sticks. He did well to stop Snodgrass’ header from finding the back of the net, and later heroically denied Diagne in a 1v1 situation.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6.5/10
The Englishman wasn’t really at his sparkling best today but did just enough to not let the West Brom attackers get past him.
Harry Maguire – 6/10
Well, the centre-back made a huge mistake around the 77-minute-mark which could have heavily cost his side. Not the kind of defending you’d expect from the club skipper. Nonetheless, he went remarkably close to scoring the winning goal as his header came off the post in the 95th minute.
Victor Lindelof – 5/10
The Swedish defender got bullied aerially by Diagne on a couple of occasions, especially during the first goal where the Senegalese forward literally outmuscled Lindelof to head the ball past David de Gea. He didn’t look convincing at all today.
Luke Shaw – 7/10
The English left-back was a constant source of threat down the left flank. He put several quality crosses into the box and even got himself an assist right before the 45-minute-mark.
Fred – 6/10
The Brazilian midfielder put up a very mediocre performance as he lacked the creativity in the opposition half.
Scott McTominay – 6.5/10
The Scottish international did a fine job at the centre of the park. He made sure to deprive the Baggies’ of possession as he put well-timed tackles and challenges to exert his dominance. His effort was cleared off the line by Bartley in the 70th minute.
Anthony Martial – 5/10
The Frenchman struggled to get himself on the end of the chances, and he didn’t look threatening at all. As a result, he was replaced by Mason Greenwood in the second-half.
Bruno Fernandes – 8/10
The Portuguese playmaker got his name on the scoresheet yet again as he hit the ball on the volley to equalise for the visitors. He was constantly trying to create potential openings for Edinson Cavani but hardly had any sort of success in doing so.
Marcus Rashford – 6.5/10
Rashford’s pace and directness certainly created problems for the hosts; however, he couldn’t make any of it count.
Edinson Cavani – 6/10
Ditto as Martial, the Uruguayan striker hardly got anything to work with throughout the ninety minutes. However, he dropped deep to help his side link up the play whenever necessary.
SUBSTITUTES –
Mason Greenwood – 7/10
The 19-year-old upped the tempo of the game as soon as he came on. He was constantly trying to cut inside from the right-wing, but Allardyce’s men offered him little to no space.
Donny van de Beek – 6/10
The Dutch midfielder added some extra energy to the visitors’ midfield, but that’s all he had to offer.
