In a recent report, Sport1 has claimed that Chelsea are set to rival Manchester United in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho. It is believed that the Blues are ‘very interested’ in securing the signature of the England international during the summer transfer period (via Sport1).
Sancho’s Inconsistent Form In The Bundesliga
It has been an up and down season for Sancho as he has struggled to reach the heights of his performances from the Bundesliga previous campaign. He has scored just three goals in the league so far but has done well to register eight goals (in total) and 13 assists in 25 matches for the German outfit this term across all competitions.
Despite his poor goal-scoring record in the Bundesliga, the 18-time England international has found ways to contribute in other ways as he is averaging 0.8 tackles, 2.1 shots, 2.7 key passes, 1.2 crosses and 3.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in league football. Sancho has even passed the ball relatively well after completing 81.7% of his attempted passes in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
The 20-year-old is currently under contract at Signal Iduna Park until the summer of 2023, but the recent financial constraints due to the Covid-19 crisis could see Dortmund cash in on their prized asset which might encourage Chelsea to make an attempt to land him next summer.
What Will The England International Bring To Stamford Bridge?
Sancho is one of the quickest players in German football and can turn on the afterburners to get the better of his marker in the final third. He has a good football IQ which helps him get into some dangerous areas inside the opponent’s penalty area.
The English sensation can be a joy to watch when he runs at full sprint and has even got the vision to play one of his teammates in when they are making runs in behind the opposition defence. Furthermore, he is an excellent crosser of the ball that makes him such a tricky proposition for most defences in European football.
Sancho is versatile enough to play in multiple positions across the frontline. Dortmund has often used him as a right-winger, but he can be equally effective on the left flank or as an attacking midfielder down the middle. A player of Sancho’s skill set and potential will be a massive coup for the Blues if Thomas Tuchel can work his magic to get a deal done to bring him to the English capital during the summer transfer period.
Sancho is a generational talent who is already good enough to claim a regular starting place in Tuchel’s squad. However, with Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech also fighting for a place on the flanks, the Chelsea boss will have to sell one of them if he is to make room for the Bundesliga star at Stamford Bridge next season.
