Chelsea faced off against Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium earlier this afternoon hoping to secure a victory on the road. The Blues made a poor start to the game and conceded the opening goal in the 33rd minute when Takumi Minamino found the back of the net. Thomas Tuchel’s men couldn’t come up with a response in the first half and went into the half-time break one goal down on the scoreline.
The West London outfit managed to find the equaliser via Mason Mount’s penalty in the 54th minute. Both teams fought tooth and nail in search of the winner but had to settle for a 1-1 draw after the full-time whistle.
Let’s take a look at how each Chelsea player fared during the clash against the Saints.
GK: Edouard Mendy – 6/10
Mendy didn’t have too much to do other than pick the ball from his net once in the first half. He was relatively tidy with his passing during the game.
CB: Cesar Azpilicueta – 7/10
The Spaniard was always willing to go in with a tackle and managed to earn possession back for his team a couple of times. He also won several important aerial duels at the back.
CB: Kurt Zouma – 7/10
The French defensive ace was strong in the air and did what was asked of him on the defensive end of the field.
CB: Antonio Rudiger – 7/10
Rudiger managed to win his fair share of aerial challenges and was excellent with his ball-distribution. However, he won’t be happy after conceding a first-half goal.
LM: Marcos Alonso – 7/10
Alonso got stuck in with a few tackles and made some crucial interceptions during the game. He was also quite lively in the Southampton half.
CM: Mateo Kovacic – 7/10
Kovacic made several driving runs with the ball and engineered one good chance during his time on the pitch.
CM: N’Golo Kante – 7.5/10
The French talent worked his socks off to win the ball back for his teammates. He disrupted the Saints’ rhythm and even pulled off a couple of good dribbles from midfield.
RM: Reece James – 7/10
James was defensively solid and managed to make some energetic dashes down the right flank. He created one good chance during the game.
LAM: Timo Werner – 5.5/10
Werner struggled to get into the game and produced a disjointed display in the attacking third.
RAM: Mason Mount – 8/10
The English playmaker created all sorts of problems for the Saints defenders and kept his calm to convert his penalty in the 54th minute, which salvaged a point for his team.
ST: Tammy Abraham – 5/10
He struggled to make an impact in the first 45 minutes and got substituted at half-time.
Substitutes:
CAM: Callum Hudson-Odoi – 6/10
Hudson-Odoi offered very little after coming on at half-time and only lasted for 30 minutes before being had taken off.
CAM: Hakim Ziyech – 6/10
He added some energy to the Chelsea attack and engineered one good chance late in the game.
CM: Jorginho – 6/10
