Aston Villa faced off against Brighton and Hove Albion at the American Express Community Stadium earlier tonight hoping to pick up maximum points on the road. The Villans were on the back foot for major periods of the game but managed to keep the Seagulls frustrated throughout the 90 minutes. The Premier League contest finished with both sides sharing the spoils after playing out a goalless draw at Brighton.
Let’s take a look at how each Aston Villa player fared during the match against the Seagulls.
GK: Emiliano Martinez – 9/10
Martinez kept his team in the game by making a plethora of world-class stops during the game. He produced a man of the match-winning display to salvage a point for the Villans.
RB: Matty Cash – 6.5/10
He made a couple of crucial clearances but got substituted at the hour mark.
CB: Ezri Konsa – 7/10
Konsa was always willing to put his body on the line to block a shot from the Seagulls and did enough work in defence to restrict the opposition from scoring tonight.
CB: Tyronne Mings – 7/10
The Villans centre-back was often quick to react to the danger and deserves credit for clearing his lines when required.
LB: Matt Targett – 7/10
Targett hardly gave anything away on the defensive end of the field. He also made a good run down the left flank but failed to create anything of note in the final third.
CM: John McGinn – 7.5/10
The Scottish midfield ace won the ball back for his side quite a few times during the game. He was also bright and adventurous with his running in the opposition half.
CM: Douglas Luiz – 6.5/10
Luiz did his defensive duties well but struggled to influence the game in the attacking third.
LW: Jack Grealish – 6/10
The Villa playmaker showed a few glimpses of what he is capable of but didn’t do nearly enough to score or create a goal.
CAM: Ross Barkley – 6.5/10
Barkley was Dean Smith’s best hope for a goal tonight. He also made some promising goal-scoring chances for others around him.
RW: Bertrand Traore – 5/10
He struggled to get a foothold in the game and got replaced after the hour mark.
ST: Ollie Watkins – 6/10
Watkins worked his socks off but never got a sniff at goal. It was a frustrating night for him.
Substitutes:
RB: Ahmed El Mohamady – 6/10
He cleared the danger on a couple of occasions.
RW: Trezeguet – 6/10
Trezeguet struggled to get into the game.
CM: Morgan Sanson – 5/10
He offered very little after coming off the bench.
