With Joe Gomez looking likely to miss out on a large part of the 2020/21 season and Van Dijk’s long term absence, Liverpool’s interest in Sven Botman certainly makes much more sense. Besides seeking a centre-back who can help the Reds with their title hunt, Jurgen Klopp also wants a long-term replacement for Joel Matip – and Botman fits the bill.
However, the defence is one of many areas where the Red Devils need to reinforce as well. Even though Eric Bailly’s recent run of form has made things look somewhat decent, the Ivorian’s injury record shows how unreliable he can be in the long run.
