Recent reports from Sunday World suggest that Manchester United are set to compete with arch-rivals Liverpool for the signature of 20-year-old Lille defender Sven Botman as the Premier League giants look keen to bolster their options at the back.
Having come through the ranks at Ajax, the Dutch youngster sealed a move to the Stade Pierre Mauroy this summer, and a streak of impressive performances at the heart of Christophe Galtier’s backline got him on both Solskjaer and Klopp’s radar.
Botman’s Impressive Run Of Form In Ligue 1
The Badhoevedorp-born defender has featured in 17 league games for the Les Dogues this season securing eight clean sheets and conceding just 12 goals in the process. While the presence of 37-year-old Jose Fonte alongside him has certainly played a great role in upping his game, one cannot deny that the Dutch youngster has been outstanding at his job this season.
The Lille star has managed to put up some impressive numbers on the board this term – averaging 1.2 tackles, 1.9 interceptions, and 2.6 clearances per 90 minutes across all competitions. Often compared to Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk, the 20-year-old defender has established himself as one the hottest prospects in European football as he looks set to add to his qualities with each passing game.

What Will He Bring To The Old Trafford?
With Joe Gomez looking likely to miss out on a large part of the 2020/21 season and Van Dijk’s long term absence, Liverpool’s interest in Sven Botman certainly makes much more sense. Besides seeking a centre-back who can help the Reds with their title hunt, Jurgen Klopp also wants a long-term replacement for Joel Matip – and Botman fits the bill.
However, the defence is one of many areas where the Red Devils need to reinforce as well. Even though Eric Bailly’s recent run of form has made things look somewhat decent, the Ivorian’s injury record shows how unreliable he can be in the long run. On the other hand, Victor Lindelof has been playing through some back pain now, and skipper Harry Maguire has been inconsistent in some crucial games this season. Hence, getting the deal over the line this winter should be a top priority for Solskjaer if he wishes to stay in the title run. Moreover, at 20, Botman will only get better in the coming seasons, and a move to the Old Trafford should benefit all the parties involved.
