In a recent report, The Lancashire Telegraph has revealed that Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg is gathering interest from the EFL Championship as Blackburn Rovers are keen on acquiring his services on loan during this January transfer window. It is believed that the Lancashire outfit has enquired about the Dutch centre-back with the Reds set to make a decision on his future this week (via The Lancashire Telegraph).
Van den Berg’s Recent Emergence At Merseyside
The 19-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance for the Merseyside giants this season but has done well to impress as part of the club’s Under-23 team recently. Van den Berg has featured in seven matches for the Liverpool U-23 side in the Premier League 2, scoring one goal and picking up one yellow card in the process.
The talented youngster managed to break into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team last season when he made four senior appearances for the Reds in the domestic cup competitions. Despite Liverpool’s recent injury concerns of late, the Dutch youngster has not received a senior call-up this season.
Hence, van den Berg could benefit from a loan move away from Anfield in January as some first-team experience could help him get better and stake a claim in Klopp’s first-team in the upcoming campaign.
What Does The Dutch Prospect Offer On The Field?
Standing at 1.89m, van den Berg is a towering presence inside the penalty box and is quite strong in the air because of his impressive leaping ability. The Dutch youngster is not shy of going in for a few tackles to earn the ball back for his team.
Van den Berg can even pass the ball well out from the back but is still quite raw and would need time to develop into a top talent in English football. A loan move in January could do wonders for his confidence as he needs to experience regular first-team football if he intends to unlock his true potential.
Should The Reds Loan Van Den Berg Out This Month?
Currently, Klopp has got Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez sidelined with long-term injuries. Joel Matip has also been injury-prone this season and is currently out of action leaving Fabinho as Liverpool’s only senior player who can operate in central defence.
Both Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips are playing the role of squad players at Anfield this season but any further injuries could derail the Reds’ title hopes even further. With all things considered, the Merseyside outfit should consider keeping Sepp van den Berg at the club as he could still serve as an emergency centre-half option for Klopp to call upon later this season.
