Liverpool faced off against Southampton at the St. Mary’s Stadium earlier tonight looking to pick a win on the road. The Reds made a horror start to the game as Danny Ings scored in the second minute. However, they responded positively and dominated possession for major periods of the first half without having a shot on-target.
It was more of the same from Jurgen Klopp’s men in the second 45 minutes as they struggled to hit the target with their attempts. The contest ended with the Saints securing a hard-fought 1-0 win over the men from Merseyside.
Let’s take a look at how each Liverpool player fared during the clash against the Saints.
GK: Alisson Becker – 5/10
The Brazilian keeper was sometimes sloppy with his ball-distribution and got caught out in the latter stages of the game but was bailed out by his teammates. It was not the best performance from him tonight.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 3/10
The English full-back lost track of Ings in the lead-up to Southampton’s second-minute winner. He gave away the ball far too many times and failed to create too many clear-cut chances in the final third.
CB: Jordan Henderson – 5/10
The Liverpool captain looked like he was a midfielder disguised as a centre-half as he was caught out of position far too often in the early stages of the game. However, he came back and produced a much-improved display in the second half.
CB: Fabinho – 6/10
The Brazilian talent made some important clearances and was not shy of getting stuck in with a few tackles as well.
LB: Andrew Robertson – 6/10
The Scottish full-back worked hard to create some decent openings from the left flank. He also got back to defend when needed but it was still not enough for his team to take anything from this game.
CM: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 5/10
The former Arsenal player struggled to get into the game and got replaced just before the hour mark.
CM: Georginio Wijnaldum – 6/10
The Dutch midfield ace kept the ball well without creating anything meaningful in the attacking third.
CM: Thiago Alcantara – 7/10
Thiago committed the foul foul that led to the Southampton goal. However, he recovered well and distributed the ball immaculately from midfield. The Spaniard also made some crucial interceptions for his team.
RW: Mohamed Salah – 5/10
The Egptian winger worked hard but struggled to make a decisive pass in the final third. He was also toothless inside the Saints penalty box.
ST: Roberto Firmino – 6/10
Firmino was bright in the first half when he got hold of the ball. However, his influence on the game faded as the match wore off.
LW: Sadio Mane – 5/10
The Senegalese speedster was a constant menace for the Southampton defenders down the left flank but he let his team down by some woeful finishing in front of goal.
Substitutes:
CAM: Xherdan Shaqiri – 5/10
The Swiss international was brought on to unlock the opposition defence but ended up chasing down lost causes instead.
CM: James Milner – 6/10
The English veteran tried to bring some control back in the game but struggled to get himself involved in the decisive end of the field.
