Recent reports from French media outlet Le10Sport suggest that Manchester United are ready to lock horns with Paris Saint-Germain for 22-year-old Brest midfielder Romain Faivre as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems determined to bolster his attacking options.
The French midfielder left AS Monaco to join the Pirates for a transfer fee of around €650k last summer; however, his recent performances have attracted attention from some major suitors, with Manchester United being one of them.
Faivre’s Impressive Form In French Football This Season
Having bagged four goals and three assists in 19 league games for the French outfit, Romain Faivre has been one of Ligue 1’s surprise standouts this season. Playing in the conventional attacking midfield position, the Frenchman has put up some impressive numbers on the board this term – averaging 2.1 key passes and 2.6 dribbles per 90 minutes. To put it into perspective, those stats rank him as the joint fourth most creative player and the fifth-best dribbler respectively in the division. It’s pretty impressive considering the fact that Faivre had made just four official appearances with Monaco (none in 2019-20) despite being at the club since February 2018.
The Asnières-born prospect has been quick to adapt to Olivier Dall’Oglio’s style of play – often slicing open the opposition defences using his pace, strength, and vision. In a nutshell, the youngster makes creation and conversion of chances far easier for his side. In an interview to Ligue 1’s official website in November 2020, Dall’Oglio described him as an ‘ambitious’ boy.
“He is a player who goes fast, has good technique and runs a lot. He can play in several attacking midfield positions: on the right, on the left, and in the centre in support of an attacker. But above all, Romain is a boy who wants to make up for time lost at Monaco. He wants to move forward, he is ambitious, he is serious, he works, he has goals.”
Is Faivre The Right Choice For The Red Devils?
Even though fans around the globe have been left impressed by the 22-year-old’s heroics in the French top division this season, it’s certainly too early even to judge his potential at the highest level. However, regular game time will definitely add to his phenomenal rise in recent months, so Solskjaer should be keeping an eye on his development. Bruno Fernandes is United’s only option in this department at present. While the Portuguese playmaker has been in blistering form since his arrival at the Old Trafford, it’s beyond any doubt that the Red Devils need to add options in midfield soon enough, especially with Paul Pogba set to leave in summer.
Having said that, Romain Faivre recently penned down a new contract with Brest until 2025, so a move away from the Stade Francis-Le Blé in January seems highly unlikely.
