During an interview with Football Insider, Kevin Campbell has backed Leeds United to sign Diego Costa. The former Arsenal and Everton star believes that the former Atletico Madrid striker could be an ideal player to compete with Patrick Bamford at Elland Road.
When asked by Football Insider which – if any – Premier League clubs would likely be interested in signing Costa, Campbell said: “Wolves or Leeds. “You would have to pay quite a significant price to sign him, and I also think there are only a couple of clubs who need a striker like him. I think Wolves are one and the other is Leeds. If Patrick Bamford loses form or suffers an injury, Leeds are stumped. Signing Diego Costa could be a good move for them.”, he added.
What Can Diego Costa Bring To The Table At Leeds United?
Diego Costa is, without a doubt, one of the most controversial strikers to play in the Premier League over the past decade or so. His time at Chelsea was filled up with controversies and fallouts with managers. It also involved a truly remarkable scoring tally that saw him net 58 goals along with 24 assists in just 120 matches for the Blues in all competitions.
Although Costa’s game has declined in recent years, the Spaniard certainly knows how to find the back of the net. As indeed, the striker has netted 83 goals for Atletico Madrid in all competitions. In addition to his scoring prowess, the 32-year-old can provide a lot of experience to the table, having featured in almost 350 competitive matches during his time at Chelsea and Atleti.
More importantly, Costa can offer the physicality and aggression that often becomes critical in the Premier League for any player. He is also known for his work ethic and commitment – potentially making him an ideal player for Marcelo Bielsa.
Should Leeds United Bring In Costa In January?
Leeds United have impressed the onlookers with his attacking intent that has seen Patrick Bamford emerge as one of the leading scorers in the league. However, one could argue that the Whites could become even more productive with a better striker upfront, and that is where Costa might be an exciting option.
Although the Spaniard is infamously known for his questionable attitude and a compulsion to indulge in controversy, his physicality, work-rate and experience could ideally make him an excellent competitor for Bamford. But at the end of the day, a lot could depend on how much the striker demands in terms of wages, knowing the Whites certainly cannot afford to overspend on any player in this difficult period.
