In a recent report, Sky Sports has stated that Everton centre-forward Cenk Tosun is closing in on a loan move to Besiktas. It is believed that the Toffees frontman will travel to Istanbul on Sunday to finalise a loan switch to his former club (via Sky Sports).
Tosun’s Underwhelming Season In English Football
The Turkish striker has endured a frustrating season at Merseyside as he has failed to earn a regular run of games under Carlo Ancelotti’s stewardship recently. The 29-year-old has only made seven appearances for the Toffees this term, netting one goal in multiple competitions.
All of his game time in the Premier League has come off the bench as Ancelotti has often preferred to play Dominic Calvert-Lewin ahead of Tosun as his first-choice forward this season. Since arriving from Besiktas back in 2018, the experienced Turkish international has featured in 58 matches for Everton, registering 11 goals and six assists across all fronts.
Hence, the player can now benefit from sealing a move back to his homeland where he will look to rediscover his old form and come back to Goodison Park as an improved version of himself next summer. He is currently under contract at Merseyside until the summer of 2022, so Ancelotti can assess his future once he returns from his loan spell at the end of this season.
What Are The Turkish Forward’s Best Attributes?
Standing at 1.83m, Tosun can use his strong frame to hold the ball up for his team. He has a great leap in him that allows him to win some important aerial duels in the final third. The 45-time Turkey international can also score goals regularly when he is playing with confidence on the pitch. However, he has struggled to cope with the high intensity of English football thus far, so maybe a return to Turkey could help Tosun re-establish himself as a top goal-scorer in European football.
Tosun Closing In On Besiktas Loan Switch: Wise Decision By Ancelotti?
With Tosun set to join Besiktas on loan, the Toffees could be a bit short in numbers in their attacking department. Calvert-Lewin remains Ancelotti’s primary forward, but the Italian tactician does not have a capable back-up to the English striker.
Even then, it seems like the Toffees would be wise to let Tosun leave and promote Anthony Gordon to play as a first-team forward when Calvert-Lewin is out of action or needs a rest this season. Plus, if Tosun can bang in some goals while on loan at Besiktas, his market value could increase in the summer which would help Everton recoup most of the £27m fee that they paid for him in 2018.
