Everton entertained Newcastle United at Goodison Park earlier this afternoon hoping to secure a positive result at home. The Toffees dominated possession in the first half but to no great effect as they went into the half-time with a goalless scoreline.
The Merseyside club got worse as the game wore off and were punished in the 73rd minute when Callum Wilson scored the opening goal of the game for the Magpies. It was Wilson who struck again in injury-time as the match finished with the home side suffering a disappointing 2-0 defeat in the Premier League.
Let’s take a look at how each Everton player performed during the clash against the Magpies.
GK: Jordan Pickford – 6/10
The Everton keeper was hardly tested in the first half but ended up conceding two goals in the second 45 minutes, which won’t please him. However, he was relatively tidy when distributing the ball out from the back.
RB: Seamus Coleman – 6/10
Coleman made some important clearances when called into action but failed to influence the game in the Newcastle half.
CB: Yerry Mina – 6/10
The Colombian centre-back read the danger well for most of the game, but like many of his teammates, he won’t be happy after conceding two late goals at Goodison Park.
CB: Michael Keane – 6.5/10
The English defensive ace was strong in the air and made a few crucial interceptions for his team. However, all of his good work were undone in the final quarter of the game.
LB: Lucas Digne – 7.5/10
The Frenchman was not afraid to challenge for every loose possession of the ball and didn’t give away anything easily on the defensive end of the field. He also orchestrated a couple of meaningful chances for his teammates up top.
CM: Abdoulaye Doucoure – 6.5/10
Doucoure pulled off a couple of clearances at the back and was quite creative with his passing as well.
CM: Gylfi Sigurdsson – 6/10
The Icelandic international struggled to give a good account of himself in the opposition half. He also got booked in the first half and was walking a defensive tight rope throughout the remainder of the contest.
RM: Alex Iwobi – 5/10
He struggled to make an impact in the final third and was replaced after the hour mark.
CAM: James Rodriguez – 5.5/10
The Colombian international had a couple of bright moments, but it was a far from convincing performance from him today.
LM: Richarlison – 7/10
The Brazilian attacker was Everton’s best hope for a goal. He caused all sorts of problems for the Newcastle defenders and probably should have found the back of the net during the 90 minutes.
ST: Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 6/10
The English striker worked hard but hardly got a sniff at goal. Carlo Ancelotti will be worried about his recent form.
Substitutes:
CM: Andre Gomes – 6/10
The Portuguese midfield ace offered very little after coming off the bench.
