In a recent report, Birmingham Mail has claimed that Chelsea are ready to play hardball for their midfielder Ross Barkley who is currently playing on loan at Aston Villa. With the English midfielder’s contract at Stamford Bridge running out in the summer of 2023, the Blues have no intention of selling him on the cheap which will be a huge stumbling block for the Villans and their hopes of landing the player permanently next summer (via Birmingham Mail).
Barkley’s Impressive Loan Stay At Aston Villa
The Liverpool-born talent has enjoyed his life at Villa Park thus far after putting in some mesmerising displays as a box to box midfielder in Dean Smith’s first-team. He produced a memorable performance in the 7-2 victory over the Premier League champions, Liverpool earlier this season which remains the highlight of his time with the Villans.
Barkley is currently out of action with a hamstring injury but is expected to play a major role for the West Midlands club in the second half of this campaign. He has been involved in six matches for Smith’s side this term, netting one goal and bagging one assist in the Premier League.
The 27-year-old has performed well to average 2.8 shots, 2.5 key passes, 1.5 crosses and 1.8 dribbles per game in the English top-flight. He has also been tidy when distributing the ball from midfield as he has made 83.2% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
What Does The England International Offer On The Field?
Barkley is a well-rounded midfielder who can do a bit of everything at the centre of the park. He loves to take a few shots from long range and has the vision to play a decisive pass in the attacking third of the field. The former Everton star is full of running and can launch some powerful strikes from distance as well.
The 33-time England international can also make some powerful runs with the ball towards the opposition penalty area. He can even score and create goals regularly when he is playing with confidence on the pitch.
What Should Be Dean Smith’s Play With Regards To Barkley?
If Barkley can continue to maintain his good form upon his return from injury, then the Villans boss Dean Smith should consider launching a move to bring him to Villa Park permanently at the end of this campaign. At 27, the English player has still got plenty of football left in him and could potentially be a real star for the Midlands outfit in the years to come. All in all, Smith can benefit from acquiring Barkley’s services for the long-run as he seems to be the ideal man to get the best out of the player over the next few seasons.
