In a recent report, Calciomercato has stated that West Ham United are set to compete with Leicester City in pursuit of AS Roma midfielder Amadou Diawara. It is understood that the Hammers and the Foxes are both interested in securing the signature of the Guinean playmaker for €20m which might be enough to tempt the Italian outfit to sanction his departure (via Calciomercato).
Diawara’s Rapid Rise In Italian Football
The Conakry-born midfield ace has been out of action for several matches this season after testing positive for Covid-19. He has featured in four matches for Roma this term, securing one yellow card and 193 minutes of playing time across all fronts.
Diawara earned a lot of plaudits for his performances last season when he made 31 appearances for the Italian giants, scoring one goal and grabbing one assist in various competitions. The 11-time Guinea international did well to average 1.8 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 0.6 clearances, 0.5 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per match in the previous Serie A campaign. Furthermore, he was excellent with his ball-distribution from midfield as he made 88.9% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
The Roma talent will be a welcome addition to the Hammers squad as he could serve as a perfect long-term successor to Mark Noble who has already entered the twilight years of his West Ham career. Diawara could also be encouraged to move to the Premier League if he is looking for a fresh challenge of playing at the highest level week in week out in the coming seasons.
What Will The Serie A Midfielder Bring To The Table?
Diawara is quite aggressive with his tackles and has shown good defensive awareness to win the ball back for his side. Standing at 1.83m, he can be a dominant presence at the centre of the park and is not shy of producing a tireless shift for the benefit of his teammates. However, his offensive game is a bit rough around the edges as he struggles to score and create enough goals from midfield.
Is Diawara The Right Fit For The Hammers?
If David Moyes is looking for a tough-tackling central midfielder, then Diawara could be a wise choice for him to consider in the future. The Roma midfield enforcer has established himself as a reliable player in Paulo Fonseca’s senior squad, so he has got the experience and skillset to make himself a regular feature in the Hammers first-team.
With all things considered, Moyes will do well to lure Diawara away from the Stadio Olimpico for €20m as he will be a great fit for them in the long-run. Plus, the Guinean sensation could potentially form a dominant midfield partnership with Declan Rice at the London Stadium for years to come which makes him a necessary option for the East London outfit to consider in January or next summer.
