The Sun has recently provided an update on Newcastle United‘s pursuit of Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori as they will now face competition from OGC Nice in pursuit of the player. It is believed that the Blues are unwilling to let him join a Premier League rival which could be a big stumbling block for the Magpies ahead of the winter transfer window (via The Sun).
Tomori’s Lack Of Game Time At Chelsea This Season
The 22-year-old has endured a frustrating campaign at the English capital thus far as he has only taken part in three matches for the West London outfit this term across all fronts. Tomori has lost his first-team place in Frank Lampard’s squad to the likes of Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger and Kurt Zouma this season.
The Canada-born defensive ace is currently surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge and needs to move on either on loan or permanently next month if he intends to get his career back on track. Tomori played an integral role for the Blues in the previous campaign when he made 22 appearances for them, netting two goals, providing one assist and securing four yellow cards in multiple competitions.
The English centre-back showed glimpses of his true potential last season when he averaged 1.9 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 2.8 clearances, 0.5 shots and 0.6 dribbles per match in the Premier League. He even distributed the ball immaculately out from the back as evident from his pass completion of 87.4% in league football (stats via whoscored).
What Does The English Defender Bring To The Table?
Tomori can use his strong 1.84m frame to win a lot of 50-50 aerial duels and excels at clearing his lines when required. He showed some signs of maturity in the previous campaign as he transformed himself into a capable defender inside his half.
The English youngster can sense the danger quickly and can pull some essential interceptions for his team. However, he is still quite raw and has got a lot to learn before he is ready to become a regular starter at the highest level.
What Should Be Steve Bruce’s Play?
At 22, Tomori is a player on the rise and would undeniably be a defender to watch out for in the years to come. However, Newcastle might struggle to tempt Chelsea to do business if Lampard continues to be reluctant towards sending Tomori to a Premier League rival.
Steve Bruce would be wise to add another quality defender to his ranks when the transfer window reopens next month. Hence, the Magpies boss should consider switching his attention to some of his other defensive targets if the Blues refuse to play ball with regards to a potential move for Tomori in January.
