Liverpool’s rough patch continues as they were held to a 0-0 draw with Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. The Reds dominated the game for the most part but were very sloppy in taking their chances. The Magpies, though, do deserve credit for their diligent defending throughout the ninety minutes, with Karl Darlow and Fabian Schar, in particular, emerging as standout performers.
Here, at The 4th official, however, we will take a look at the Liverpool players in their dismal display this evening.
Liverpool Player Ratings Vs Newcastle United
Alisson 7/10
Alisson had nothing really to do for most of the game. He was called into action only once, in the 79th minute when the Liverpool goalkeeper brilliantly denied Matt Ritchie.
Trent Alexander-Arnold 7/10
Trent Alexander-Arnold provided the necessary offensive support from the right flank as Liverpool tried to breach the NUFC backline. A good performance from the young right-back.
Nat Phillips 6/10
Nat Phillips looked weak in dealing with the NUFC attackers during the early stages of the game. However, the youngster grew into the game as time progressed.
Fabinho 7/10
Fabinho was a reliable presence in the Liverpool backline. His experience and ability to read the game helped the Reds retain a clean sheet in this important fixture.
Andrew Robertson 7.5/10
Andrew Robertson also provided a lot of work-rate from the left-hand channel. He covered a lot of areas, and whipped in multiple crosses, but was unlucky as the Liverpool forwards failed to convert their chances.
James Milner 6.5/10
James Milner looked sharp when Newcastle United were in possession. His experience and leadership played a key role in helping the visitors dominate the midfield.
Jordan Henderson 7/10
Jordan Henderson was ice cool in the middle of the park. He threaded excellent forward balls, one of which even led to an excellent opportunity for Roberto Firmino.
Curtis Jones 6/10
A relatively ineffective performance from Curtis Jones, who couldn’t offer much creativity despite almost camping himself in the opposition half. Taken off midway through the second half.
Mohamed Salah 6/10
It was another bad day at the office for Mohamed Salah, who couldn’t quite impose his presence in the final third. The Egyptian often got isolated when attacking the opposition.
Roberto Firmino 6.5/10
Firmino was sharp in the build-up play as always, but the forward certainly needs to work on his productivity as he missed excellent opportunities to find the back of the net.
Sadio Mane 6/10
Sadio Mane had an ineffective game for Liverpool on the left flank. For the most part, the winger couldn’t really breach the NUFC backline that marked him out of the game.
SUBSTITUTES
Georginio Wijnaldum 6/10
Offered more energy and positivity going forward after coming on for Jones midway through the second half.
Thiago Alcantara 6/10
Passed the ball around, struggling to create anything of note.
Xherdan Shaqiri N/A
A late replacement for the ineffective Salah.
