In a recent report, Marca has stated that Real Madrid are ‘moving closer’ towards recruiting Bayern Munich defender David Alaba who will be free to talk to other clubs in January over a potential move when he becomes a free agent at the end of this campaign. However, Los Blancos could face stiff competition from Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain in pursuit of the Austrian international but hold an advantage over them as the player favours a move to the Spanish capital (via Marca).
Alaba’s Impressive Numbers At Bavaria This Season
Alaba has maintained his high standards in this campaign as well after helping Bayern win the Bundesliga title and the UEFA Champions League trophy last season. The Wien-born defensive ace has been involved in 16 matches for the Bavarian giants this term, scoring one goal and grabbing one assist on all fronts.
The Austrian player has caught the eye with his performances in the Bundesliga as he is averaging 1.0 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 1.7 clearances, 0.5 shots and 0.6 key passes per 90 minutes in league football. Alaba has also distributed possession accurately out from the defence by completing 84.9% of his attempted passes in the German first division (stats via whoscored).
With his current contract at the Allianz Arena set to run out next summer, the 28-year-old could fancy a new challenge at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium as he is currently playing some of the best football of his long and illustrious career.
What Does The Austrian International Bring To The Table?
Alaba has got the pace to pull off some important recovering runs inside his half when his teammates are caught out of position on the counter. Given his past history as a left-back, he can still step up and make some promising dashes out from the back and is an excellent passer of the ball.
The 73-time Austrian international has transformed himself into a great defender at the back. He usually times his challenges well and can often come away with the ball on the defensive end of the field. He can even hold his own in the air and doesn’t have too many weaknesses in his game at the moment.
Is Alaba The Right Fit For Los Blancos?
Currently, Zinedine Zidane is in dire need to add more quality to his underperforming squad. A player of Alaba’s quality will undeniably bolster Real Madrid’s defensive options in the coming seasons. He will enhance the overall depth of Zidane’s squad and could potentially form a solid defensive partnership with Raphael Varane at the Spanish capital for years to come. All in all, Alaba will be a fantastic fit for Los Blancos as he will fill their needs perfectly and help them challenge for major trophies in the future.
