Bayern Munich play hosts to VfL Wolfsburg on Wednesday in a must-win game at the Allianz Arena. The Bavarians lost their place at the top to Bayer Leverkusen on the weekend after being held by Union Berlin, so Hansi Flick will be desperate for all three points. However, things could get difficult against a Wolfsburg side who are one of the two unbeaten teams in the Bundesliga this season.
Predicted Bayern Munich Lineup Vs VfL Wolfsburg
Defence
Hansi Flick could make a few alterations from the side that drew with Union Berlin on the weekend. Alphonso Davies, in particular, has started in back to back matches after returning to full fitness so he could be replaced in favour of Lucas Hernandez.
Niklas Sule was not in the teamsheet in the last game, so Jerome Boateng is once again favourite to start in defence alongside David Alaba, at the heart of Bayern Munich’s four-man backline. Benjamin Pavard should, however, retain his place at right-back while Manuel Neuer should continue in between the sticks. The German will be looking for his first clean sheet in the Bundesliga since mid-October.
Midfield
Leon Goretzka is doubtful for Bayern Munich heading into this fixture. He could potentially join Joshua Kimmich in the list of absentees and with Javi Martinez lacking fitness, it could be an ideal opportunity for Marc Roca to get a rare start in midfield.
The Spaniard should occupy the holding midfield role, just beside the in-form English youngster Jamal Musiala, who has become one of the hottest prospects in the league following two excellent performances. He should operate in the number eight role, almost alongside the Bayern attackers.
Attack
Flick is unlikely to make too many changes in the attacking department. Leroy Sance was benched against Union but should return to the side at the expense of Kingsley Coman.
Sane should, therefore, form Bayern Munich’s creative trifecta alongside Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry as they look to offer the supply for Robert Lewandowski.
The Pole has had a difficult month so far as Bundesliga opponents have doubled down on him, barely allowing him any space and freedom to work with. He was, however, on the scoresheet in the 1-1 draw with Union, so it will be interesting to see if the Bayern striker can keep up his momentum this midweek.
