According to a recent report by Real Madrid based outlet DefensaCentral, Manchester United are interested in signing Los Blancos star Lucas Vazquez this winter. It further states that the Norwegian coach is prepared to submit an initial offer of €15 million for services of the Spaniard.
Having come through the ranks at Real Madrid, the 29-year-old is currently in his thirteenth season for the Whites. Since making his debut for the senior team in the 2015/16 season, he has featured in 218 games, winning 11 major honours for the Spanish giants.
Zinedine Zidane has fielded Vazquez in every possible position on the right flank over the years – from covering for the injury-prone Gareth Bale to slot him into the right-back spot in recent times. With the change in management and departure of several system players, the versatile star once found himself way down the pecking order. Nonetheless, he was able to make innovations to his style of play to quickly fit in the right-back position when Nacho Fernandez, Dani Carvajal, and Alvaro Odriozola were all on the sidelines. The French manager could count on him to make an impact on games when needed, which partly explains his obsession with the winger.
What Will The Spanish International Bring To The Theatre Of Dreams?
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started almost every game for the Red Devils since his move from Crystal Palace last summer.
While Timothy Fosu-Mensah lacks experience at the highest level, Ole doesn’t rate Diogo Dalot (currently on loan at AC Milan) very highly.
Heading into the most hectic part of the season, the Christmas period – with 6 games in under 21 days – a potential injury to Wan-Bissaka can give rise to a heap of troubles at the club. As far as tactical scenarios are concerned, playing 5 at the back with Vazquez instead of Wan-Bissaka will make much more sense as the Spaniard can add a whole new dimension to his team’s attack as compared to the Englishman who offers very little or no threat driving forward.
Furthermore, his versatile nature will allow him to play as a part of the front three, in his natural position.
Is Vazquez The Right Choice For Ole?
Well, yes, but it comes down to two crucial factors.
Number one – if the board fails to land high-priority targets like Jadon Sancho, Eduardo Camavinga, and Paulo Dybala in the winter transfer window. Secondly – Paul Pogba’s premature departure. Either of them happening should tip the scale towards Vazquez’s move to Old Trafford.
After the recent 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig which saw the Red Devils getting eliminated from the Champions League, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s position at the club seems to be hanging by a thread. An injury crisis is the last thing he’d want at this moment. Recruiting all-rounded players might be the way to go if he wishes to make it through the Christmas period.
