Manchester United entertained Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford earlier tonight hoping to win and close the gap to Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table. The Red Devils made a dominant start to the game but struggled to break the opposition defence down in the first 45 minutes. The visitors kept a good shape at the back and went into the half-time break all level on the scoreline.
Both teams went all out for the three points but lacked the cutting edge in the final third. However, Man United scored a fortunate winner in injury-time when Marcus Rashford found the back of the net with his deflected strike. The match finished with the Red Devils earning a lucky 1-0 win over Nuno Espirito Santo’s men at the Theatre of Dreams.
Let’s take a look at how each Man United player fared during the contest against Wolves.
GK: David de Gea – 7.5/10
The Spanish keeper made some solid stops to restrict the Wolves attackers from finding the back of the net during the 90 minutes. It was a well-deserved clean sheet for him tonight.
RB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6/10
The former Crystal Palace full-back performed his defensive duties well but failed to influence the game in the Wolves half.
CB: Eric Bailly – 7/10
Bailly dealt with everything that came his way and passed the ball well out from the back. He will be happy with the clean sheet tonight.
CB: Harry Maguire – 8/10
The English centre-back was a commanding presence inside his half and did well to keep the opposition frustrated throughout the 90 minutes.
LB: Alex Telles – 5/10
The Brazilian left-back struggled to give a good account of himself in the first half and was subbed off at half-time.
CM: Paul Pogba – 7/10
The French international was a strong presence in midfield and was always looking to create openings for others around him.
CM: Nemanja Matic – 7/10
Matic shielded the Man United backline well and read the danger quickly to make a few important interceptions for his side.
RM: Mason Greenwood – 6.5/10
Greenwood engineered a couple of decent opportunities for his teammates but never looked like he was going to score.
CAM: Bruno Fernandes – 7.5/10
The Portuguese playmaker kept going right until the very end and picked up a great assist in injury-time when his pass opened up the Wolves defence and allowed Rashford to score the winner from his deflected attempt.
LM: Marcus Rashford – 7/10
Rashford was lively in the first half but was running out of gas towards the end. However, he never stopped looking for chances and finally managed to net the winning goal via his deflected strike.
ST: Edinson Cavani – 6/10
The Uruguayan striker faded in and out of the game. He had a goal ruled out as off-side by VAR.
Substitutes:
LB: Luke Shaw – 7/10
The Man United left-back worked hard and showed great energy to get forward. He even orchestrated a couple of decent openings for others around him.
ST: Anthony Martial – 5/10
Martial’s pace and clever footwork caused a few problems for the Wolves defenders. However, the Frenchman failed to capitalise on any of the chances he got after coming off the bench.
CM: Scott McTominay – N/A
He came on to run the clock down.
