Liverpool entertained Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield earlier tonight looking to pick up a positive result at home and go back to the top of the Premier League table. The Reds made an electric start to the game and scored the opening goal in the 26th minute courtesy of Mohamed Salah’s deflected strike. However, Spurs were fortunate to score the leveller against the run of play when Heung-min Son found the back of the net in the 33rd minute. Both sides went into the half-time interval with nothing to split them.
The Merseyside giants were completely dominant in the second 45 minutes and finally netted the winning goal in the 90th minute courtesy of Roberto Firmino’s header. The contest ended with Jurgen Klopp’s players securing a brilliant 2-1 win at Merseyside which took them back to the top of the Premier League standings.
Let’s take a look at how each Liverpool player performed during the contest against Spurs.
GK: Alisson Becker – 7/10
The Brazilian keeper was hardly tested during the game but did well when called into action. He couldn’t do much about Son’s excellent finish, which ruined his chances of a clean sheet.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 6/10
The English full-back passed the ball well without creating too many chances in the attacking third. However, he was caught out once defensively in the second half which led to Steven Bergwijn hitting the post.
CB: Rhys Williams – 6/10
The youngster did not let the occasion get to him and produced a matured display at the heart of the Liverpool defence. However, he was caught out in the lead-up to Son’s equaliser in the first half.
CB: Fabinho – 7/10
The Brazilian talent made some important clearances during the game and did well to keep Harry Kane quiet throughout the 90 minutes.
LB: Andrew Robertson – 7.5/10
The Scottish international was a real bundle of energy in the first half as he made some wonderful driving runs with the ball. Even though he got tired towards the end of the game, yet it was another solid all-round display from Robertson tonight.
CM: Curtis Jones – 7.5/10
Jones looked like he had been playing for the club his whole life considering how easily he passed the ball around in midfield. He was always looking to create an opening and produced another classy display at the centre of the park.
CM: Jordan Henderson – 8/10
The Liverpool captain ran the show in midfield as he spread the ball with ease and grace. He also orchestrated a handful of chances for his teammates to pounce on in the attacking third.
CM: Georginio Wijnaldum – 7/10
The Dutch midfielder hardly gave away the ball but found it tough to break the opposition backline down in the final third.
RW: Mohamed Salah – 7/10
The Egyptian winger was fortunate to net the opener when his strike saw the ball deflect into the empty net. However, he was a constant menace for the Tottenham defenders throughout the 90 minutes with his powerful running and trickery.
ST: Roberto Firmino – 9/10
The Brazilian striker often dropped deep to collect the ball and was always looking to create plays for others around him. He ended up scoring the winning goal with a fine header in the 90th minute. His goal will live long in the memory of the Liverpool supporters this season, considering how important it could be in terms of the title race.
LW: Sadio Mane – 7/10
The Senegalese winger ran himself to the ground trying to make plays for his teammates from the left flank. He also hit the woodwork with a ferocious strike from close range. Still, there was no goal for him tonight.
