During an interview with Football Insider, Kevin Campbell has urged Leeds United to sign Fikayo Tomori. The former Everton and Arsenal star believes that the Chelsea centre-back could solve Marcelo Bielsa’s defensive woes as the club look to add reinforcements in the defensive department in the January transfer window.
“Tomori is a fantastic player and, let’s not forget, an England international. If Leeds could get an England international defender, who is also left-footed it could be a masterstroke from Marcelo Bielsa.”, he told Football Insider.
Leeds United’s Defensive Woes This Season
Leeds United have entertained the Premier League with their all-out attacking approach this season, having already netted 24 goals in just 14 matches. It has, however, come at the expense of lacklustre defensive performances, with the Whites conceding 30 goals – more than any other team in the division so far.
Summer signing Robin Koch has looked like a bargain but is yet to properly establish himself in the Premier League while the same can be said for Liam Cooper, who hasn’t quite been able to marshal the Leeds backline this season. In addition, the marquee defensive signing from Real Sociedad in Diego Llorente has struggled with injuries.
As a result, Marcelo Bielsa has been forced to play Luke Ayling at centre-back, alongside Cooper as the Argentine tactician copes with the absence of Koch and Llorente. The duo has failed to provide any semblance of solidity, with the Whites notably conceding eight goals in their last two matches.
Is Fikayo Tomori The Right Option?
Leeds United could welcome the arrival of a new central defender as they look to add more depth and competition to the side. Fikayo Tomori, in that regard, might make perfect sense as the Chelsea centre-back searches for a move away from Stamford Bridge after managing just 44 minutes of league football this campaign.
A product of the Chelsea youth academy, Tomori has the commitment, determination and skill to establish himself as a vital cog in Bielsa’s tactical setup. He is also quite composed on the ball, which serves as a bonus for a Leeds United side that like to play with possession and dominate the opposition.
However, what really makes Tomori such an appealing target for the Whites is his experience in the Premier League. The 23-year-old has featured in 33 competitive appearances for Chelsea which makes him a more experienced outlet than any of Leeds’ current defenders, as far as the English football is concerned.
Leeds United should thus look to make a move for the Englishman in the upcoming January transfer window. It remains unlikely that the player has any future at Stamford Bridge, giving the Yorkshire outfit the ideal opportunity to bag a bargain.
