Arsenal finally bounced back to winning ways with a sensational 3-1 win over Chelsea at Emirates. The Gunners were the best team throughout the game, deservedly getting the breakthrough in the 34th minute through the penalty spot before Granit Xhaka doubled the lead just before half-time with a remarkable free-kick effort. They endured some nervy moments late in the game, but Bukayo Saka’s second-half goal was enough to ensure the victory for the hosts.
Arsenal Players Rated In Win Over Chelsea
Bernd Leno 8/10
Bernd Leno didn’t have much to do for the most part of the game as Chelsea failed to even register a shot on goal. The German, unfortunately, had no chance of saving Tammy Abraham’s goal from close range but did make a heroic save to deny Jorginho from scoring the penalty.
Hector Bellerin 7/10
Hector Bellerin didn’t enjoy the best of starts in this game. He looked sloppy with the ball and lacked the understanding with his teammates. Defensively, however, he remained solid, dealing with the pressure of Christian Pulisic.
Rob Holding 8/10
A top defensive display from Rob Holding, who was simply a rock at the back for the hosts. His imposing presence at the back made life difficult for Tammy Abraham, especially from aerial or physical duels.
Pablo Mari 7.5/10
Pablo Mari had a rather rash start to the game when one of his tackles saw him receive a yellow card. However, the Brazilian made amends with his brilliant positioning that allowed very little freedom for the Chelsea attackers. Did concede a late penalty but was bailed out by the goalkeeper.
Kieran Tierney 9/10
Kieran Tierney enjoyed one of his best performances in an Arsenal shirt this evening. His forays down the flanks caused real problems for Reece James, with the Scot eventually winning the penalty that led to the opener. He also produced a host of excellent passes in the final third, one of which led to an excellent chance for Gabriel Martinelli.
Mohamed Elneny 7.5/10
Mohamed Elneny was sloppy with his passes, especially during the first phase of the game. He had a much easier game after Arsenal started dominating proceedings and later had one attempt to hit the crossbar.
Granit Xhaka 8.5/10
Xhaka’s marvellous free-kick was exactly what Arsenal needed before going into half-time. It changed the complexion of the game while also giving the Swiss international the confidence to run the show in the middle of the park.
Bukayo Saka 9/10
It was an excellent performance by Bukayo Saka, who made some good runs on the right flank in the first half. Scored the all-important third goal, effectively sealing all three points for his side.
Emile Smith Rowe 8/10
Emile Smith Rowe’s intelligent movements played a key role in giving Arsenal the upper hand in the final third. The playmaker showed real maturity on the ball, notably releasing Saka for his third goal.
Gabriel Martinelli 8.5/10
Gabriel Martinelli offered the pace, and the energy Arsenal were desperately missing in the final third. The Brazilian caused a real menace on the flanks while also looking lively in the first line of press. A great return to the Premier League for the youngster.
Alexandre Lacazette 9/10
Alexandre Lacazette was one of Arsenal’s best performers this evening. The Frenchman ran his socks off, offering some real work-ethic in the number nine role and calmly converting the spot-kick that led to the opener.
SUBSTITUTES
Joe Willock 5/10
Offered nothing after coming on for Smith Rowe during the final phase of the game. He was way too lenient in dealing with Pulisic, who played a key role in the build-up to Abraham’s goal.
Nicolas Pepe 5/10
Made no real impact on the proceedings after coming on for Martinelli in the 71st minute. Wallowed around the flanks as usual.
Shkodran Mustafi N/A
A late replacement for Lacazette as Mikel Arteta opted for additional defensive bodies.
