Premier League giants Chelsea temporarily climbed to the top of the table today after picking up a comfortable 2-0 victory against Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United. The London club started the game well in the ascendancy, and by the halfway mark were completely dominant. The opening goal actually came from a Newcastle player, as Federico Fernandez put it into his own net from close range. Although Timo Werner missed a couple of good chances to double their lead, it was his defence-splitting run that led to Abraham’s goal.
Here Are The Chelsea Player Ratings Vs Newcastle United:
Chelsea Player Ratings vs Newcastle United
Edouard Mendy – 7
The Senegalese keeper didn’t have too much to deal with in between the sticks as the Newcastle attackers struggled to find a way through the Blues’ back-line. Made a couple of good saves over the ninety though.
Reece James – 7
The Englishman got up and down the flank all through the night and played in a couple of delectable balls that the Blues attackers were unable to put away. Kept Lewis and Saint-Maximin quiet for the most part too.
Kurt Zouma – 9
The only word to describe the Frenchman’s performance in defence tonight would be dominant. Didn’t allow any space in behind and made a number of key tackles and headers at the back as well.
Antonio Rudiger – 7
The German international centre-half was brought into the team as Thiago Silva was rested due for this game. Had very little to deal with in terms of Newcastle attacking but looked comfortable enough.
Ben Chilwell – 7
The English speedster got forward and linked up extremely well with the likes of Werner and Mount. Bombarded forward on every opportunity and made some important blocks down the flank as well.
Mateo Kovacic – 7
The former Real Madrid man put in a composed display in the heart of midfield as he made some good forward runs in the first-half. Was less adventurous in the second but put in a solid defensive shift.
N’Golo Kante – 9
The Blues’ combative midfield destroyer was, far and away, the best player on the pitch. Didn’t allow the Magpies attackers any time in the middle of the park and was composed with his forward passing as well.
Mason Mount – 7
The English midfielder played some good passes in the core of the pitch and ensured that the Newcastle attackers didn’t have time on the ball with his pressing. Did miss a good chance in the second half though.
Hakim Ziyech – 7
The Moroccan’s sheer range of passing was on display once again as he sprung balls all over the park. Didn’t have the penetration he might’ve been hoping for but put in a good defensive shift as well.
Tammy Abraham – 8
The English striker showed excellent movement and composure in front of goal today, as it was his strike in the second half that led to the Blues’ second. Worked hard off the ball at times as well.
Timo Werner – 7.5
Although the German wasted a couple of glorious chances over the course of the ninety, his run ahead of Abraham’s goal was a moment of true brilliance. He seemed to split the Newcastle back-line in half.
