According to Tuttosport, as cited by AS, Torino are eyeing a move for Lucas Torreira in January. The Seria A outfit were interested in the Arsenal midfielder in the summer before he joined Atletico Madrid on loan. However, Torino now believes they may have a shot at signing Torreira in January as Atleti brace themselves for the arrival of Geoffrey Kondogbia.
How Has Torreira Fared At Atletico Madrid?
Torreira was brought in as a midfield reinforcement for Atletico Madrid in the summer, with a player joining from Arsenal on a season-long loan deal. He was expected to fill in for Thomas Partey, who moved the other way around.
The Uruguayan international has featured in every match for Atleti since joining in early October. But, he has made the starting eleven only twice in four matches while mustering only 31 minutes of action in the UEFA Champions League.
It appears Torreira has fallen behind Saul Niguez, Koke and Hector Herrera in the pecking order. It is only going to get worse following the arrival of Kondogbia in January, meaning a move away from Wanda Metropolitano might not be a bad option for the midfielder.
Does Torreira Have Any Future At Arsenal?
Torreira could be useful at Arsenal considering the club’s current midfield option. Thomas Partey impressed against Manchester United earlier this month and has recently picked up a knock. Either way, the Ghanaian international prefers an equally dynamic partner in midfield, which is why he thrived alongside Mohamed Elneny.
The Egyptian, however, is no world-beater while the duo of Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos have both failed to provide the consistency, this campaign. That is where Torreira could come into the fray.
Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, however, he is not exactly a tactically compatible midfielder under the leadership of Mikel Arteta. It was evident last season when the player found it difficult to earn an identity in the middle of the park. Hence, it would perhaps be a wise option for the Gunners to even offload him permanently as soon as possible.
A Move To Torino Makes Sense
As far as Torreira is concerned, he could welcome a move to Torino. The midfielder does have experience in Serie A, having previously played for Sampdoria and is also quite familiar with the Italian culture.
More importantly, Torreira is way more likely to get regular game-time for a Torino side, who could use a long-term replacement for the ageing Tomas Rincon. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the current Atletico Madrid midfielder is allowed to walk away from his loan spell at the club in the upcoming January window.
