According to a recent interview by Football Insider, ex-West Ham United ace Danny Mills has said that former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will find it harder and harder to find a move away with every passing day. It was clarified earlier in the summer by renowned journalist Nicolo Schira that Rangers were interested in the former England international, and he even went on to say that the club were in advanced talks to sign him as a free agent. Despite these links, nothing seemed to materialise out of the rumours, as Wilshere still remains without a club since the start of the season.
However, former West Ham United ace Danny Mills says Wilshere will find it hard to secure a Rangers move, especially as time continues to pass since he was released by West Ham United earlier in the season. Speaking to Football Insider, he said, “The longer he is without a club the harder it is going to be for him to find one. People will start questioning his fitness and his injury record, which we have already done time and time again. How many games can you get out of him? He obviously has a huge amount of talent but is that enough? Suddenly he may have to go on trial to get that fitness back and if you are pushing yourself you can break down.”
What Is Rangers’ Current Midfield Situation?
Steven Gerrard’s men possess, without a shadow of a doubt, what is the best midfield roster in the entirety of the Scottish top-flight. Although Celtic fans might have a thing or two to say about that, the sheer depth and quality that Rangers have in the midfield area is enough to tip the scales by a strong margin. Irrespective of whether the role in question is a defensive or offensive one, Rangers have the players to meet all the requirements. Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Ryan Jack are all perfectly capable of playing in the holding midfield role, with Bongani Zungu a recent addition to the side as well.
While the South African is also good enough to be played in the more attacking position, the availability of Scott Arfield and Joe Aribo as well, means that Gerrard is spoilt for choice in the position. In such a situation, the question that needs to be asked is whether or not Jack Wilshere would get into this current Rangers team’s midfield. In the current roster, Gerrard seems to have the perfect blend of attacking flair and defensive dynamism, and it would take a strong effort from the Englishman to carve a place for himself in this stacked eleven.
What Would Jack Wilshere Offer To The Team?
The Englishman is an attacking midfielder by position but is capable of playing in a slightly more defensive role if required as well. One of Wilshere’s biggest strengths is his passing from deep, in that he’s capable of breaking down an entire opposition defence with just one through ball. Adept at making late runs into the box and finding spaces that wouldn’t be picked by another player, Wilshere can offer quite the threat in attacking phase of things as well. The former Arsenal man was once touted to be the future of the English national team, but injuries hindered his progress quite a bit.
Mills Says Wilshere Will Find It Hard To Secure A Rangers Move: Should Gerrard Sign Him Now?
Seemingly incapable of keeping himself fit when playing regular football, there’s no guarantee that such a trend won’t continue upon bringing him in. Pure from a footballing perspective though, Wilshere probably does offer a large chunk of quality. However, it’s worth taking into account that Rangers have Ianis Hagi in the side as well. Although the Romanian has been used in the wide area, it’s no secret that attacking midfield is his preferred role. Taking all of this into consideration, it wouldn’t be an overly smart move from Rangers to gamble on a player who is now seemingly well past his prime, especially considering the sheer numbers that Gerrard has to choose from in the position.
