During an interview with Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur have been urged to sign Sami Khedira by Paul Robinson. The former Spurs goalkeeper thinks that the Juventus midfielder still has a lot to offer and could be a bargain for the Lilywhites in the upcoming January transfer window.
“We no longer have players retiring at 30, 32 unless it is a really bad injury. Players are fitter and stronger, and it is helping them elongate their careers. There is no reason why Khedira would not do that, he has a huge amount to offer, but you are not going to sign him on a three-year contract.”, Robinson told Football Insider.
Is Sami Khedira Still A Reliable Outlet In Midfield?
A product of the Stuttgart youth academy, Sami Khedira was regarded as one of Germany’s finest midfielders during his time at Real Madrid. However, his downfall truly began following a move to Juventus in 2015.
The holding midfielder’s progress in Turin was marred by a series of injuries, and in recent years, the 33-year-old has proved to be a tactical misfit for coaches like Maurizio Sarri and now Andrea Pirlo. As a result, he has failed to muster over 1,500 minutes of league football since the start of the 2018/19 campaign.
Khedira’s lack of game-time at the highest level of football in recent seasons, combined with a poor injury record is enough to raise doubts over his temerity. It is, however, fair to point out that the midfielder does have a lot of experience in professional football, having made almost 100 appearances each in La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A.
Is He A Viable Target For Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed quite an inspiring start to the new campaign as they are currently leading the Premier League. The massive improvement in midfield, especially following the arrival of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, has been the main reason behind their enormous success so far.
That said, Jose Mourinho could welcome the arrival of someone like Khedira in his ranks. The German midfielder possesses excellent passing skills, which are combined with his work ethic and an ability to read the game. It could make an ideal alternative for Moussa Sissoko, whose lack of quality on the ball remains a big issue for Spurs.
Khedira already shares an excellent relationship with Mourinho with the duo having worked together at Real Madrid. So, the Juventus outcast shouldn’t find any difficulties in settling into the tactical setup and with his contract expiring at the end of the season, he could be a smart short-term investment for the Lilywhites this January.
