Premier League giants Chelsea have secured progress into the knockout stages of the Champions League after picking up a 2-1 victory against Ligue 1 outfit Rennes. The Blues took a first-half lead through Callum Hudson-Odoi, after he was expertly picked out on the counter charge by Mason Mount. The Pensioners were in the ascendancy for the remainder of the opening periods, but the second half had something else in store entirely. After wave after wave of Rennes pressure, the London club conceded a late equaliser, only for Olivier Giroud to produce a vital goal right at the start of stoppage time.
Here Are The Chelsea Player Ratings Vs Rennes:
Chelsea Player Ratings Vs Rennes
Edouard Mendy – 8
The Senegalese keeper was called into action on numerous occasions over the second half, and he was up to the task on every occasion. Arguably the best player on the pitch against his former club.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 6
The veteran showed his lack of match sharpness tonight as he wasn’t on the same wavelength with the winger as Reece James usually is. Defended rather efficiently though and tried to get forward.
Kurt Zouma – 7
The French international defender was nothing short of dominant for the most part, but it was him that let the Rennes man run free in the box ahead of the home side’s goal. Won a number of key headers though.
Thiago Silva – 8
The Brazilian veteran was extremely composed and collected in possession tonight as he never looked fazed by the Rennes pressure. Defended the box well and looked for forward passes too.
Ben Chilwell – 7
The Englishman had a good chance to score the winner late on, but he, unfortunately, mistimed his header. Did well to get up and down the flank and blocked a couple of crosses as well.
Jorginho – 6
The Italian, despite being neat and tidy for the most part, was constantly harried when in possession. Misplaced a couple of attempted long balls and didn’t look at his fluent best in the engine room.
Mateo Kovacic – 7
The Croatian international tried to dribble his way through the heart of the Rennes defence on a number of occasions, and he achieved it at times too. Fluent and composed when in possession.
Mason Mount – 7
The Englishman played an absolute peach of a pass to release Hudson-Odoi ahead of the first-half opener. Didn’t get overly involved in the play after the opening half-hour of the fixture though.
Callum Hudson-Odoi – 7.5
The speedster showed a supreme level of composure to slot the ball in past the approaching keeper to give the Blues the lead. Tried to inject pace into their game with his movement and dribbling.
Tammy Abraham – 6.5
The Englishman struggled to get into the game tonight as the Blues’ midfielder was unable to take control of proceedings. Held the ball up well at times and won a few important defensive headers too.
Timo Werner – 6.5
The German was far from his usual best tonight as nothing he tried seemed to be coming off. Wasted a glorious chance in the first half before taking some poor touches over the course of the tie.
Substitutes
N’Golo Kante – 6.5
The Frenchman added a bit of composure and combativeness to the Blues’ back-line after coming on, as he started to win the ball back in the central areas of the pitch.

The Frenchman stepped up when the Blues needed him most and came up with what is sure to come as a crucial goal. Leapt well above the opposition defenders to head in.
